About Luke

Luke is a musical chameleon. His command of many different styles from jazz to progressive metal, afro-beat to funk and reggae, to pop and classical makes him one of the most sought-after instructors and guitarists in Southern California. With influences ranging from Stevie Ray Vaughan to Metallica, Hendrix to Wes Montgomery, and Santana to Jobim, he has studied and taught almost every style of music. Luke has been teaching privately for over eighteen years and is a faculty member at LA College of Music (formerly LAMA) and has also directed jazz and rock camps at University of Wisconsin and elsewhere. His own experience starting as a self-taught musician to teaching at the college level has given him a level of understanding of the best way to get his students from Point A to Point B. "I believe that music should be fun and expressive, and that it can make a big difference in people's lives, like it did for mine," he says. "I love sharing that passion with other musicians and students and I feel that music is a life-long journey and we're on it together." After graduating from University of Wisconsin with a degree in jazz studies, including supplemental training at Berklee School of Music and Milwaukee Conservatory of Music, Luke has established himself as a composer, collaborator, sideman, songwriter, and band leader.

Luke says, "I love music and teaching! I get really excited helping other people learn and grow and get inspired to do the things they love. I've always felt that we are on a journey exploring music together - I've been teaching since 1998 and I still learn something new every day. There's so much to experience as a musician, and so much that goes beyond music into life itself. I've traveled across the country and around the world and met so many great people through music, and it has helped me through a lot of tough times. I also believe there's room for everyone. Some people just want to be able to play some silly songs for their children, so kids are aspiring rock stars, and some people have a song in their soul itching to get out. I try to find that unique thing with everyone and help them achieve their goals and keep them inspired."

Luke would love to talk to you about the things you love and want to learn. Send him a message with five songs that really inspire you to set up a lesson!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Ear Training

I learned to play piano at an early age, reading music. At 11 years old, I began playing guitar and learned mostly by ear. As a freshman in college, I majored in music and began studying jazz and classical guitar, playing in bands, and learning music history, sight-singing and ear training. Because of my experience learning guitar and rums by ear, I was a natural at ear training and quickly began helping other students in my class. I found that I am able to interpret the concepts of music easily to help other people understand them in a unique way, and that I can understand intervals, scales, and chords in multiple ways as a result of my experience in both piano and guitar. I also try to make it fun and incorporate songs that my students like into the ear training curriculum, as well as incorporating apps and technology currently available.

Guitar

I have been studying music since age 5 and guitar since age 11. I have a degree in Applied Music and Jazz Studies, which required me to also study classical guitar, sing in concert choir and vocal jazz ensemble, and learn theory and music history. I have been teaching private and group lessons since 1998 and have played in many different bands and ensembles, from afro-beat bands to musicals bound for Broadway, touring rock bands to wedding bands to teaching college ensembles. I have a range of interests and expertise that I find exceeds that of many other musicians, and I use that background to help find new ways to keep my students learning and inspired while still incorporating the fundamentals I learned in school. My methods are as unique as the students I teach, and I believe that learning guitar is a journey that is exciting and different for everyone.

Music Production

I began studying music production and recording in college, but most of my training has been on the job. As a session musician in LA, I have worked on projects from commercials to albums to Broadway musicals. I recorded my own acoustic guitar album in 2005 using ProTools and have also worked on professional projects using Logic Pro. Many of my students also ask me to help them learn the basics using GarageBand or Reason, and technology has made recording and editing software affordable for everyone. I have a small home studio that I use for recording and teaching, and I also hep students learn what gear is appropriate for the styles of music that interest them. I have also worked as a session musician for recording classes at LA College of Music.

Songwriting

I began writing songs before I even started taking music lessons. I joined a band in high school and became the principle writer for that group and many more to follow. I have written songs for film and TV, and have recorded dozens on my own songs and unique arrangements. I studied songwriting, composition and arranging in college and helped may professional singers and songwriters to improve their own music through practice and careful study of song structure. I have also organized workshops and symposiums for musicians to share and hone their craft, and also specialize in teaching guitar for singer-songwriters.
