About Gabrielle

Does your student struggle in understanding what they read and answering questions about a story they have just read? Does your student have a low AR reading level in comparison to their grade level? Does he or she dislike or avoid reading and/or writing tasks? Does he or she struggle with finding the main idea of a passage or summarizing a chapter? Does your student seem to be a poor test taker and struggle in multiple subject areas? Does your student have difficulty following directions? In conversation, does he or she often say things that do not make sense or say things that are not related to what you are talking about? When writing, does he or she struggle to come up with what to write, even if there is a writing prompt provided? Does his or her writing lack description? Does your student struggle with organizing his or her thoughts for writing tasks and/or often write off-topic?

If so, I can help.

I am an experienced, committed and reliable tutor. I have been a tutor for 13 years and have helped hundreds of students in that time. Rather than focus on symptoms of academic problems, (i.e. having students read the questions before the passage to work on reading comprehension and making inferences or having students do spelling or math facts drills) I use programs that get to the core, underlying issues that are causing the academic struggles. The programs that I use are research-based and highly effective. Students learn how to comprehend and remember information for future reference instead of doing endless practice workbook pages or drills. I offer both one-on-one tutoring and group tutoring at a lower rate.

I am currently studying to be a Speech-Language Pathologist. I tutor Pre-K through 12th grade students in all subjects. I help students struggling with listening comprehension, speech (expressive and receptive language), phonics, reading comprehension, spelling, writing, grammar, vocabulary, math, history, science, test-taking and study skills.

I have worked with many children who have speech delays or language disorders, such as specific language impairment. I have also helped many children on the spectrum. I use a program that helps students to develop both receptive and expressive language. My students have made great gains in the areas of conversation skills, narrative skills (story-telling), vocabulary-building, ability to follow directions, ability to use correct grammar when speaking and overall language comprehension (reading and listening comprehension).

Over the years, I have helped many ESL students. I help my students by assisting them in understanding their schoolwork; promoting correct pronunciation when reading aloud; and working on vocabulary-building, reading comprehension, grammar and writing skills.

I have served as a learning coach for students who are homeschooling using an online public school academy. When serving as a learning coach, I prepare for lessons, teach lessons and help students with schoolwork. If you are looking to homeschool this school year, feel free to e-mail me with any questions and I would be happy to talk to you about how I can be a learning coach for your student as well.

I am very dedicated to helping students reach their full potential at school. I work very hard to ensure that my students improve their skills. At the first session, I give my students a pre-assessment test to find out what areas we need to focus on. Then, I recommend certain materials based on each student's needs. These materials usually include research-based programs that are proven to improve academic skills.

I prepare my students for the rigorous Common Core curriculum if their schools use the Common Core. The programs that I use complement the Common Core and teach the student how to excel in logic, critical thinking, comprehension and written expression. After taking students through the research-based programs, I show them how to apply the techniques from the programs to Common Core material.

Although in-person tutoring is available, I am now offering online sessions via WyzAnt's new online tutoring platform and/or video chat. As a result of the clarity of the video chat, I am able to teach these sessions exactly as if I were sitting across the table from the student. I am able to teach the specialized programs that I use and even provide homework help via online methods. If using a specialized program, I have a copy of the workbook in front of me and the student has a copy of the workbook in front of him or her. We go through the comprehension activities on each page of the workbook exactly as if we are sitting across the table from one another. My online students really enjoy their online sessions because they are low-pressure and utilize technology such as the iPad or computer. Middle schoolers and high schoolers especially like tutoring online. Online tutoring is great for out-of-area students who really need the specialized programs that I offer, but are too far away for me to come to their homes. Many of my online students participate in several extracurricular activities, so online tutoring works well for them due to their time constraints. We can meet in person for the pre-assessment and for the first few sessions and then transition to online tutoring.

I require that parents/guardians sit with the student during all online sessions. This gives the parents/guardians the opportunity to see their student progress as we move through the programs. I also give parents/guardians activities to work on during non-tutoring days in order to help their students progress through the programs faster.

If you have any questions, please feel free to send me an e-mail.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Most of my students have ADD/ADHD or other focusing difficulties, so these are challenges that I work through every day. Over 15 years, I have learned what works and what doesn't work with this population. I use a variety of techniques that I have learned from professionals in the area of focusing difficulties to help my students focus as much as possible during tutoring sessions. I would be happy to share these techniques with you so that you can help your students pay attention more frequently.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

I have been a professional tutor for ten years and have been working with children on the autism spectrum for 7 years. In the last two years, I have begun to work with these children in regards to their academic skills. I use two highly successful programs to help these students with oral language (expressive and receptive vocabulary), listening comprehension and reading comprehension. As a result of these programs, the students have also improved their writing and grammar skills.

I have helped ESL/ESOL students learn English for 12 years. I worked for a local school district teaching English to ESL/ESOL students and I have also tutored many ESL/ESOL students one-on-one. We work on English speaking, grammar, vocabulary, reading, reading comprehension, spelling, writing and phonics. I have worked with several students who had very limited English skills and have helped them to be able to converse, read and write at a proficient level. I use successful reading, writing and phonics programs to help improve English skills as well as practice workbooks and hands-on activities.

I have over 7 years of experience teaching phonics to children who are in Pre-K through 6th grade. Much of my experience is in teaching Pre-K students how to read. I use phonics workbooks, flashcards, charts and other materials to help students improve their phonics skills. I also stress the importance of reading to young children in order to improve their skills. Depending on the age and skill level of the child, I will read to them and with them to help them gain confidence.

One of my students started tutoring with me when he was 4. In no time at all, he was reading short words. Today, he is one of the top readers in his kindergarten class. One of his recent reading tests had a goal of 8 points. He scored 60 points on that test.

Whether your child is a new reader or a student who is struggling with phonics, I can help to improve their skills.

Special Needs

In my 15 years of tutoring, I have worked with several students who have special needs. I use research-based programs to help students with dyslexia improve their phonemic awareness, phonics, spelling, and decoding skills.

I also work with students who have speech delays. Many of my speech-delayed students have a language disorder. They have a limited vocabulary and limited language comprehension (understanding what people are saying). I use a specialized program to help speech-delayed children to improve their expressive and receptive vocabulary. This program also improves language comprehension and helps the student use correct grammar when speaking.

I am also very familiar with the special needs of children with autism. I use a language comprehension program to help children on the autism spectrum increase their expressive and receptive vocabulary. In addition, I use another language comprehension program to help these students improve their reading comprehension and listening comprehension skills.

Study Skills

Since students who struggle with study skills often struggle in multiple subject areas, I use a general comprehension program to help students to first understand what they are studying. This program also works on recall skills, vocabulary-building, note-taking, and written expression.

As we progress through the program, I teach the student to summarize and synthesize large amounts of information that is presented to them in their textbook. We start by reading short passages and progress to chapters in their textbooks.

I have found this particular program to be very beneficial for those students who seem to have difficulty remembering dates, facts and details from passages or chapters. The program teaches the student how to understand and absorb information from any subject. Most importantly, the student is more likely to remember the information when it's time to take their test.

Patient and Personable Tutor

My 15 year old son has been tutoring with Gabrielle for almost a year (since November 2014.) My son has always been a below-average student and has gone through a few different tutors including a popular commercial tutoring service. My son has improved dramatically over the last year, improving his GPA from a 1.8 to 2.3 at the end of the last academic year (2014-2015.) He’s on track to finish
