About Hannah

Hello there!

My name is Hannah and I am an alumna of UC San Diego, where I double majored in Physiology/Neuroscience and Political Science and was a health care and social issues minor.

You can count on me to help your child learn. I have experience as both a private tutor and a classroom teacher for 3-5 ESL learners. On average, my students jumped at least a grade level in reading/writing OR improved their grades by at least 2/3 a letter grade. As a child, I had been sent day by day to tutors and tutoring centers. As a result of that, I know the ins and outs and have created a fun, relaxed, yet rewarding system for tutoring my students. I understand that for many tutors, everything is done "cookie cutter," where the child is simply given homework assignments then tests to determine if they learned what they were supposed to. My system is different. I create individualized plans for your child to succeed; I patiently make sure that they understand everything that they are taught and do so in a fun way. After all, learning shouldn't just be a tedious task!

Thank you for reading this free response and I hope that you have a nice day! If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact me at any time.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

AP U.S. History - 5
Tutor for U.S. History for ESL student during the 2010-2011 school year.
SAT II U.S. History - 700

Biology

I have a B.S. degree in physiology & neuroscience from UC San Diego. I know that biology (and science in general) can be hard to understand so I usually try to turn each concept into stories or ideas that are more familiar with students.

College Counseling

I have personally gone through application processes for UCs and private schools using the Common App. I also served as a reader and adviser for incoming seniors applying to universities in the fall.

ESL/ESOL

Previously taught a group of 3-5 ESL students through interactive lessons, including day trips around the neighborhood so that they could learn through actual interactions. As an ESL learner myself not all that long ago, I understand the difficulties that they encounter and try to make everything as easy for them as possible. My lessons with ESL students are based on their individual levels and are individualized so that each student can learn as much as possible and retain that memory. In the long term, I want to make English as memorable as possible so that they too can learn to love and appreciate English.

Government & Politics

I have a B.A in political science from UC San Diego with a primary focus on American politics. In addition, I received a 5 on the AP Government exam and was a participant of the We the People civic program when I was in high school.

Psychology

While in college, I took a variety of psychology classes and became very interested in the topic and have taken courses that focus on anything that catches my interest, from sensory neuroscience to abnormal childhood psychology. In fact, I like psychology so much that I'm applying for a PhD in it! I hope to inspire others to love psychology as much as I do, including the weird and the wacky.

SAT Writing

SAT I Score - 750
Experience on the essay component and know the techniques to best answer the multiple choice answers due to personal experience in tutoring.

Writing

Willing to read and provide guidance on writing research papers, term essays, personal statements, or anything else school related. Will teach students how to fully engage the readers and how to best approach writing.
