Writing skills are a direct reflection on one's thinking skills - connecting your thoughts on paper is solid proof you have the neurological ligatures to fully comprehend the subject or concept being explored. This is the work I love to do with college students, anyone really, who are laboring to hammer out an idea. Obviously, we do the grammar stuff (imperative in the formal writing world), the vocabulary pumping work, but most importantly, we organize and put a diabolical choke hold on what it is you're trying to say.
I have over three years of experience working with college students at both Central Washington University and North Seattle Community College. Also, something to note, I am not confined to the English department. I work with students of nursing, history, the sciences, AND English/journalism/literature. Reaching outside of classroom assignments, I have assisted tons of students with their resume writing and letters of intent for scholarship and internship programs, as well as college transfer papers. Concerning my own writing background: I graduated with an English/journalism hybrid Liberal Arts degree, studied Literary Fiction at the University of Washington and commercial/business writing at the School of Visual Concepts. I spent the summer of 2012 in Edinburgh, Scotland further deepening my skills. All writing – academic, commercial, literary, essays, articles – is a lassoing of concepts, language, mechanics, craft, organization, and creativity. Practice and breadth reigns in the relevant, prevalent, and super solid stuff. I have been a writer my entire adult life and continue to do it professionally as a tutor (satisfies the teacher within) and in my freelance copywriting business. That's it. Happy tutor hunting and feel free to contact me with your questions. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
