I believe the greatest phenomenon in education is when a student has that "Aha!" moment in their learning, and are then able to fully explain and teach a concept to another. Mastery of a topic is one thing, but being able to teach it to another shows they have truly taken ownership of their learning, so much they are able to explain and share it with confidence! This is my driving passion in education--helping others take ownership of their learning. As a graduate of UCLA with a B.S. in Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology, I know how easy it can be for students to let the stress of grades and the future prevent them from actually appreciating the material. My goal is to help students take a step back and see big pictures in the material so they can attack it holistically and methodically instead of “punching in the dark”.
I specialize in tutoring biology, middle and high school mathematics, and Spanish, whether it is normal schoolwork or on standardized tests. Each class will consist of review of key concepts followed by a series of practice questions and advice on how to best tackle each question. I will also monitor the student’s progress with periodic quizzes. At the end of each class, I like to have the student explain to me what we just covered. I think this reversal of roles is essential for students to make the necessary neuronal connections in their brains so it sticks in long-term memory.
I uphold professionalism to the highest standard and for that reason a student can expect punctuality and well-prepared lessons from me, while I expect the students to not settle for less than their best! I am flexible with time and have a 24-hour cancellation policy, however I do offer make-up classes. I do have adequate space in my home that is open and conducive to studying, however I am happy to travel to another location that is convenient for the student.
I look forward to hearing from you and helping you to achieve success in your endeavors!

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
