About Andrew

Hello!

This is Andy! I am a piano teacher and composer who graduated from Berklee Collge of Music.

My tutoring experience started back in high school where as a member of the Math Honors Society, I helped out students on Algebra and Geometry after school. Then, while I was attending college, I was hired as a tutor to facilitate music majors on materials from their music theory classes. After graduation, I began to use WyzAnt through which at first, I mainly tutored math but later on, I began teaching piano.

To me, as both a teacher and student, the most valuable skill is to enjoy-- to enjoy every moment that comes, even the less pleasurable ones, for the true treasure lies in not the end goal but rather the path. To most young folks, the less pleasurable moments usually mean the boring ones such as studying or going to class.

Music is something that people enjoy when it comes to listening but is notorious for being just as unpleasant as any other subject, like Math for instance, when it comes to learning.

Learning takes discipline. Whenever I teach, I see myself as a navigator who guides students through their musical journey. As music is a language, my goal is for my students to become fluent and communicative in so -- being to read different forms of music notation, play songs and melodies by ear, and come up with their own compositions, too-- and always while striving for that goal, my hope is for them to embrace both the fun and the less fun aspects of learning.

To anyone who wants to learn about music, whether it be someone already with experience or someone who simply wants to pick up a new hobby, I would be thrilled to be of service!

I look forward to hearing from you! Thank You!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Ear Training

I was a music theory tutor during my attendance at Berklee College of Music. I helped out fellow students on music theory materials, which a great amount include ear training. Ear training has been my strongest and most passionate field throughout college. As a student, I tested out most of my required ear training courses and took additional ear training courses (harmonic ear training and an atonal solfege) for my own enjoyment.

Music Theory

I have worked as a music theory tutor for Berklee College of Music. Though my job I have helped students understand musical concepts, hear chords & melodies by ear, and get ahead in their academics. Subjects include Ear Training, Harmony, Arranging, and Solfege.

Piano

I have received my bachelor's degree from Berklee College of Music. As a piano principle student, I've studied with some of the most renowned musicians in the contemporary music industry including jazz pianists, synthesizer players, and organists. As a pianist who has played for around 17 years, I have participated in many ensembles of various styles, such as jazz, gospel, and pop. As a teacher now, I have shown students how to embrace the language of music through playing songs and improvising and teach them how to effectively practice.
