In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
After I took the ACT in high school, I was given an award for my outstanding performance on the test. I have also spent much of my life working as a published writer and professional copy editor. Those jobs and my experiences teaching English and college level Humanities have given me a good deal of insight into advanced reading comprehension and good, clear writing.
The history of art is also the history of human thought. The arts have always reflected the concerns of their creators and patrons. In medieval Europe, the arts were primarily used to indoctrinate the masses in Christianity, but today they are provided to the individual to satisfy his or her individual needs or desires. The theories underlying various artistic movements and schools reflect the development of civilization.
I have been a professional proofreader since 1995, working for the top advertising firms in the Los Angeles area. I have exceptional verbal ability, having earned a perfect score of 800 on the verbal section of the Graduate Record Exam. I have also taught SAT prep classes for the verbal section of the SAT. I also teach Humanities for the University of Phoenix, so I critique students' writing constantly.
When I took the Graduate Record Exam, which is the graduate-level version of the SAT, I earned a perfect score of 800 on the Verbal section. I also taught SAT English--vocabulary, reading, and writing--for two summers. As a professional writer and university teacher, I know what goes into solid reading comprehension and good writing.
While a student in high school, I often heard that hoary bit of advice from English teachers that if I came across a word I didn't know, I should try to guess its meaning from the context. I am glad to this day that I didn't follow this advice and instead looked up every word that was new to me. A guess, after all, is only a guess. That strategy helped me earn a perfect score of 800 on the Verbal section of the Graduate Record Exam and also earned me the nickname "The Dictionary."
I have been a regularly published, professional writer since 1996, when I started writing for American Record Guide. I also contributed articles to Classical Music: The Listener's Companion, a guide to recordings of classical music. Aside from being a writer, I have taught writing for SAT English classes and currently teach college level humanities, for which I must critique my students' papers. Clarity, simplicity, and thoroughness are the standards by which I judge my students' writing and my own.
