My name is Garret B. I graduated salutatorian from High School in 2007. I excelled in mathematics, English, and the sciences.

I attended UCLA from 2007-2009, and I'm currently enrolled full time at College of the Desert. Throughout my high school and college career, I tutored my peers in the subjects in which they were having difficulty---mathematics, chemistry, English, etc.. Their grades improved from failing to passing with a C or better, and from passing with a C or B to at least a whole letter grade improvement. I have tutored middle school more recently through the AVID program for the past three years.

Throughout my years as a student, I learned best from the teachers who treated me as an individual with hopes, dreams, and interests outside of the immediate topic of discussion. I find that the best way to teach a student is to relate to them on a personal level and make the learning as "fun" as possible.

In the AVID program I lead a group with specific questions in various subjects, providing guidance and direction to the learning process. On a practical level, I have found the most effective method of teaching is individualized to the student; find the problem area(s), find the areas of strength, and proceed from there. I address the subject of discussion at length with the student to evaluate strengths and weaknesses, and from there focus on homework and the subject overall in conjunction with the syllabus.

I have specific experience in a wide variety of subjects, but my strengths are mathematics, science, and English (both literature and grammar).

What I enjoy most about tutoring is helping a student progress and become more engaged in the learning process themselves. Being a part of the emerging self-confidence and academic success of the student is a reward in and of itself.

I excel in math because it is about equality and balance. I find explaining the reasoning behind the process (the "why" and the "how" ) makes the process itself (the "what") easier to understand and become proficient in.

As a tutor, I welcome any suggestions from parents and students. I am easy to reach---please contact me with any questions about specific subjects of study or to schedule a lesson. Thanks!
