About Gabriela

Bio

I used to be a public middle and high school band director and have pivoted to tutoring, mainly in writing and mainly online (even before the Corona Virus hit). I still offer music lessons based on theory and instruments/voice as well. My philosophy is that every student already has the skills they need, but I am here to provide guidance in identifying and using those skills efficiently. The ultimate goal is learning how to learn rather than completing one task without being able to apply...

The ultimate goal is learning how to learn rather than completing one task without being able to apply that knowledge ever again.

Being a classroom teacher taught me many necessary skills in education, and tutoring has added to my perspective. Having been able to speak to parents and students about their experiences, I strive to incorporate those needs and preferences into the way I run my lessons and how I hold people accountable. It is important to me to differentiate to each individual student and go above and beyond for the ones who really want to succeed.

I have had the opportunity to participate in a wide range of different writing endeavors, including assisting in GRE preparation, helping a non-native English Learner write a dissertation proposal, and editing high school students' essay assignments. The most successful aspect has been tracking and developing new skills over memorizing information.

While attending college, I worked for the music office at San Diego State and often handled admissions/advising tasks as well as guiding other students toward a successful path through college. As a band director, I have mastered the art of fitting the classes you want into your schedule. My favorite thing to do is prove people wrong by researching requirements and laws that allow students to take classes that will be meaningful to them and not take classes that will not be beneficial to their well-rounded education.

I have a Bachelor's degree in Music Education from San Diego State University. I have my teaching credential from there as well. I have 4 years of classroom teaching experience, including band, choir, orc

Subjects

English

Writing,

Writing

Writing has always been one of my top subjects in school. I quickly developed efficient ways to plan and write essays. At San Diego State University I earned a score of 10 on the Writing Placement Assessment, which is the highest score possible. During college, I often helped peers with their essays, especially those whose first language is not English. Once I started my career as a band director, I often helped my music students with their writing assignments for other classes during lunch or after school. Now I focus on tutoring in writing and have had clients who were preparing for the writing portion of the GRE, their dissertation proposal, analyzing a poem, and writing essays from prompts in general. I proudly earned my teaching credential and am eager to continually implement teaching strategies that are tailored for each student.

Music

Saxophone,

Saxophone

I started playing the Alto Saxophone in 6th grade and eventually got into San Diego State University on the instrument. I have played in multiple types of ensembles including wind ensembles, orchestra, jazz bands and combos, marching band, and event entertainment. Besides having experience as a band director since 2016, I have also taught private lessons starting around that time as well. I regularly play gigs around LA on saxophone, including playing Rhapsody in Blue with the La Mirada Symphony in February 2020.
Voice (Music)

Voice (Music)

I began taking voice lessons in college as a music major in 2012, where I performed classical solo pieces, opera roles, and choral works. These performances included languages like English, Italian, French, German, and Lithuanian. Other performances opportunities have included covers of pop tunes, musical theater, and original music. After successfully teaching choir in middle and high school, I have gained experience in shaping the voices of individuals with and without music backgrounds.

College Counseling

College Counseling

During college, I worked in the music office where I often handled matters dealing with admissions and financially aid, and often guided peers in figuring out the best classes to take in order to maximize each semester and graduate on time. I worked with advisors often and always strive to help people choose classes that are relevant to their goals. A a band director, I have worked diligently with students and their counselors to devise a 4 year plan that allows the student to be in music or their elective of choice all 4 years of high school because this makes a student stand out on their college applications. I use a matrix/ chart, checklist of all requirements, and knowledge of resources in order to create an easily understandable path to success.
