Hi there! My name's Michael. Thank you so much for considering me as you search for a tutor.
Currently, I am an ESL teacher (since June 2009) with Los Angeles High School Community Adult School, through the LAUSD school system. I hold a California Teaching credential in English as a Second Language, and Secondary Basic skills such as English, social studies, history, theater.
I have also privately tutored for the last 6 years in English accent reduction and general English issues such as grammar, writing and reading. I have also coached and tutored actors preparing for auditions or film work.
Finally, I am a participant in the Screen Actors Guild BookPals program, a volunteer reading program in elementary schools where we pick a school and read to elementary school kids each week. I also participated in PencilPals, where we write letters to a selected student which is hosted by Screen Actors Guild and monitored by the participating school and teacher. These are wonderful programs!
My strengths are simply that I love people! All ages! And I try to create a positive atmosphere where learning is enjoyable, diverse and consistent! My classes are always well attended and test scores are good!
When I work individually, I work carefully to determine with the student how best he/she learns and create an atmosphere of trust with my students. They absolutely KNOW I support their growth and success. I like to challenge my students in a way that is flexible, and fun. I remember the teachers I loved the most in school always knew their material, but were flexible and had great senses of humor. They inspired me to achieve more than I had done before!
I try and follow that model.
Thank you so much again for considering me! I look forward to meeting with you and helping you and/or your child enjoy learning and achieve your goals.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I hold a California Teachers credential granted June 18, 2009 and my Designated Adult Education Subjects authorized are: Elementary and Secondary Basic Skills, Communication Skills, Performing Arts and English as a Second Language (ESL). Since June 2009, Currently I teach ESL Level 3-A a Low Intermediate level, teaching grammar, life skills, reading, and speaking! I have taught ESL Level 4 Grammar and Level 6 reading. Level 4 is an intermediate level and Level 6 is an advanced level which I teach at Los Angeles High School and Metro skills Center in LA thru the LAUSD school system. In addition to a regular part time assignment I also substitute teach for Adult ESL on a per needed basis. I have sub taught all levels ( 1-6). My teaching involves teaching verb tenses, phrasal verbs, gerunds/infinitives, modals, punctuation, some spelling, adjective clauses, pronunciation/speaking and reading skills. The Level 6 reading classes involve 8th grade to 10th grade level reading workbooks, vocabulary building, comprehension focus and speaking and reading aloud. There are designated text books, but I augment the lessons with other texts, and online ESL materials. I also teach basic daily life skills competencies (CASAS) which are required by the state of California. From asking for directions to applying for a job, or making a telephone call to a store-- these lessons really help the ESL student navigate through the difficulties of daily life in the USA. As a private tutor, I would teach elements of all the above to a prospective student, paying particular attention to what they really need i.e. speaking, pronunciation improvement, grammar etc. The difficulty of material is matched to the students entry level English competency and/or past education in their home country. I would tutor all areas of English, focusing on that students weakest area or most desired areas of improvement.
