UC Berkeley (Other)
I have 18 years experience teaching high school Spanish and have lived and worked in Spain. I am a UC Berkeley graduate with a minor in Italian. My passion is the study of foreign languages. I have also studied French and Arabic and am able to understand the difficulties of language learning from both the student and teacher's perspective. I am adept at explaining concepts in a clear and concise manner and targeting the student's specific difficulties. Students have found my tutoring helpful in improving their performance on tests, increasing their ability to comprehend and respond in Spanish and/or developing conversational Spanish when traveling to a Spanish-speaking country. I can provide the student with useful classroom strategies and study skills to make language learning easy and fun at all levels.

Joan is an extremely skilled and gifted tutor. Her ability to explain and simplify the curriculum is invaluable! During my daughter's first lesson she not only explained everything in depth but also checked to make sure my daughter was comprehending the material as they proceeded with the tutoring session. Before we left, Joan gave my daughter material that would be useful and also gave her suggestions and advice on dealing with the trouble my daughter was having. This was the first lesson but will definitely not be the last! I HIGHLY recommend Joan! Thank you Joan and WyzAnt.
Joan has been a fabulous Spanish mentor for my son. She is organized, efficient, prepared, and anticipates his needs for Spanish II. In addition, she is supportive and encouraging which has increased his confidence. With Joan's help, he has improved and maintained his grade substantially. Joan has been both a language student and teacher and is especially understanding of associated challenges. We give Joan our highest recommendation. She is a fabulous Spanish tutor.
Joan is very knowledgeable and sets the students at ease with her demeanor. Students have a chance to take a deep breath and review materials presented in the class at a pace they can really grasp what is being taught.
Joan has helped me to better understand the Spanish language, with all its complicated tenses and confusing irregular verbs. She has also made me a better speaker, and has significantly improved my Spanish vocabulary.
I really like how patient she is towards my son. She shows a caring demeanor when during each lesson and my son enjoys learning with her. I would recommend her to anyone needing a tutor.
Joan is a great Spanish tutor. She is patient and extremely knowledgable. She knows how to effectively teach the foundations of the Spanish language so your child can build on those and do well in class. My son listens and responds to her tutoring which means a lot in the learning process.
Joan is great to work with. Always very responsive to whatever you need to work on. Great in answering questions and if does not know herself she will follow through and have the answer on the next lesson.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am qualified to teach all levels of Spanish. With beginning students I begin with pronunciation and greetings and introductions and progress by adding vocabulary and simple sentences. With the more advanced students we work on conversation, grammar and reading comprehension. I tailor the lesson to fit each student's needs, interest and/or goals
