Hi! I am an engineering undergrad at Smith College and offer tutoring in STEM classes through the high school level, in the French language, and for guitar. As an undergrad, high school classes are fresh in my mind. I remember how frustrating they can be and am happy to share the strategies that helped me succeed. I chose engineering because I love learning about how the world works and using that knowledge to solve problems. This mindset motivates me. STEM classes don’t need to be scary or frustrating - they are empowering!

I have 2 years of experience tutoring middle and high school students in math. I was a lab assistant for AP Chemistry, and last year worked as a research assistant in an organometallic chemistry lab in college. I took AP Physics 1 and 2 and passed both AP tests, and excelled at Introductory Physics in college. I studied French through AP in high school, got a 5 on the AP test, studied in France for a summer, and succeeded in a 200-level French course in college. Lastly, I have been a professionally performing guitarist for six years and have been teaching guitar for one year. My most recent musical honor was performing with the national honor band, the Next Generation Jazz Orchestra. As a guitar teacher, I start with the basics and keep students engaged by teaching them the songs they love. I can transcribe any song you want and teach it to you!

As a tutor, I let the student guide the discussion. When the student does not understand a topic, I explain the concept, give an example, and then let the student apply the concept to the problem. I work with students by breaking problems down into smaller chunks and going through each part methodically as a team. I am also a fan of puns and keep tutoring sessions light and fun with academic humor!

As a young tutor, I speak the language of Gen Z - because I am Gen Z. That means I can communicate technical scientific concepts clearly while staying fresh and engaging.

Great tutor and very good with teenagers!

Our teenager has enjoyed the guitar lesson with Serena and is looking for more! Serena comes prepared. She is patient and personable and tries to look for ways to include songs that her students like.

Very patient and great at explaining

Serena G. is a very patient tutor and helped my daughter understand concepts in Algebra II that she has been struggling with. She explained the concepts in terms that clicked for my daughter and verified her understanding by having her explain why she got the answers and not just learning by rote.
