About Kelsey

Hello!

I graduated UCSD this June with a degree in Biochemistry and Cell Biology, and a cumulative GPA of 3.98. I love talking science with just about anyone and helping students learn difficult subjects. I think one of the best parts of teaching is seeing how different people approach the same type of problem. There is a huge amount of creativity in learning, and there are many routes to success. I love helping students learn complex topics and find their own path to understanding, enjoying, and mastering them.

A bit about my background: I am a transfer student to UC San Diego from MiraCosta college, so I'm familiar with the academic expectations and the pace of learning at semester schedule community colleges and at universities on the quarter system. For students at UCSD or Miracosta, I also bring experience with specific courses and professors at both of these schools.

During my time at UCSD, I also acquired a great deal of laboratory experience. I conducted research in Dr. Julian Schroeder's plant biology laboratory for over year, studying drought resistance in the model organism Arabidopsis thaliana. I helped identify a novel gene involved in drought sensing and was honored to present my work at two academic conferences. During my senior year, I switched my focus to chemistry and began working in Dr. Nathan Gianneschi's lab, using organic chemistry techniques to develop nanomaterials for targeted drug delivery systems. The skills I learned through these long term research projects make me an ideal tutor for students who are currently enrolled in biology or chemistry lab classes.

I owe most of my academic success to study groups and other collaborative learning environments. No matter how competitive the class or the exam you're studying for, I've always found it extremely valuable to bounce ideas off of other students, compare notes, and share everything I've learned. I'd like nothing more than to bring my competitive edge and seasoned test-taking experience to help you find your own path to success.

Throughout the course of my studies I have considered a variety of career options, so my academic experience is particularly diverse. In chemistry and biochemistry, I have extensive experience with the following topics: general chemistry, the entire organic chemistry sequence, structural biochemistry, metabolic biochemistry, and pharmacology. In biology, I have studied genetics, molecular biology, cell biology, evolution, virology, and nutrition. I also have experience in physics and calculus, for those struggling with the more concrete and theoretical aspects of science.

I have presented my research at four academic conferences (two in biology, one in anthropology, and one in art history). I have also received several honors for my performance, including MiraCosta College Presidents Permanent Honor Roll, Provost Honors at UCSD, membership in the Muir College Steward Society at UCSD, and UCSD's "Eureka!" undergraduate research fellowship. Due to my breadth of academic achievement, I was also selected as one of seven Muir College students in my graduating class to be designated as a 2016 Muir Scholar.

If you are seeking a motivated tutor who is knowledgeable in chemistry and biology and familiar with the local colleges, I'd be happy to assist you. I'd love to learn more about you and help you reach your goals. My hours are flexible, so feel free to reach out and we can plan some study time.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Biochemistry

I have completed all three organic chemistry courses in the university-level sequence, a metabolic biochemistry class, and a structural biochemistry course. I received an A grade in all of them.

Biology

During my BS program, I completed courses in basic biology, genetics, evolutionary biology, structural and metabolic biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, pharmacology, and nutrition. I also conducted research in a molecular biology lab at UCSD for over year, studying drought resistance in the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana.

Genetics

Beyond basic genetics I learned in lower division biology classes, I have taken a genetics course at UCSD in which I received an A+. This course covered: basic Mendelian genetics and more complex patterns of inheritance, the molecular basis of genetics, DNA mutations and repair, epigenetics, gene mapping, population genetics, QTL mapping and marker-assisted selection, gene therapy, genetic engineering, genome editing, bacterial genetics, and telomeres/aging/cancer.

I can also teach mathematical models and proofs for population genetics from an evolutionary biology class at UCSD.

Nutrition

During my biochemistry degree at UC San Diego, I completed a nutrition course with an A grade.

The class covered the following topics: Dietary Reference Intakes (FDA guidelines/regulation) and assessing nutritional claims, digestion and absorption of carbohydrates, lactose intolerance, digestion and absorption of proteins, gluten, lipids, metabolism, lipoproteins, regulation of blood glucose, diabetes, glycemic index, gut microbiota, cholesterol transport and atherosclerosis, omega fatty acids, protein quality and protein malnutrition, energy balance and hormonal regulation of satiety, dieting, water soluble and fat soluble vitamins, exercise.

Organic Chemistry

I have taken all three organic chemistry classes offered in the basic sequence and received an A grade.

My organic chemistry I course at Miracosta College covered the structure and reactivity of alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, alkyl halides, alcohols, ethers, aromatics, and dienes. Also covered were IR and Mass spectroscopy and nomenclature. The course also included a laboratory component.

I took the next two organic chem courses at UCSD. These classes had a strong emphasis on NMR spectroscopy and included the following topics: EAS reactions, aldehyde and ketone chemistry, enols, enolates, and aldol condensation, organometallics, reactions with amines and amides, heterocycles, conjugation reactions.

I also spent my last year at UCSD conducting research in an organic chemistry lab, working mainly with peptide synthesis and organic dyes.

Writing

I spent my first year of college as an art history major, which required many term papers of 10-15 pages. One of my professors nominated my paper for a writing prize.

At UC San Diego, I completed three writing-based courses and achieved an A grade in each of them. I presented my 12-page research paper for an art history class at UCSD's annual undergraduate research conference.

I have also edited college essays and medical school admission essays for several of my friends over the last few years.
