About Katherine

I first started teaching when I was attending university and I went on a volunteer service mission for over a year and learned that I loved it. My favorite part is when I see the light in students' eyes as they understand something that they thought was once hard, but is now easy. I also discovered this was my talent: to take something abstract in concept and simplify it in a fun and understandable way. That is been my goal with teaching over the years, to teach and have fun, and I have been successful.

My specialty lies with students who have a fear of making mistakes and are too anxious about it to try. I help students through this fear by building their confidence and putting into perspective that practicing prevents mistakes.

I am uniquely qualified to teach Japanese as I lived in Japan as a student and teacher for a couple of years. On top of that I have studied it for 10 years. During that time I have given personal Japanese lessons where I helped improve their average by a full grade letter. After I went on to volunteer at my university to help the tutoring room for students studying Japanese. I really focused on teaching them that you truly know more than you think.

While in school I found English to be one of the easier and more fascinating classes. By the eighth grade I had a college reading level and found myself becoming the most vocal in my literary classes surpassing even my older siblings in my comprehension of symbolic meanings in books. I have also helped my younger sibling with his English homework, focusing mostly on spelling and grammar helping his grade rise from a B to an A.

My drawing qualifications hale from my degree which is in Art from Utah State University. While I mostly focus on comics and illustration, I have a strong penchant for character design, life-drawing, and design of an image (how to layout an image). During school they I was trained how to critique art removing bias from opinion. In my clubs that I attended I tried to help other art enthusiasts by teaching them basics of drawing and I have often been called in to help teach other clubs to draw as well.

I am available from 9am-9pm Monday- Saturday. Please contact me if you have any questions or wish to know more about how I can help you strengthen your know-how.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
