About Rachel

I am a devoted and passionate educator, constantly striving for self-improvement and seeking opportunities to become a better leader. Empathetic and highly motivated, I rely on hard-work, self-reflection and unwavering enthusiasm to achieve my goals. As a teacher, I believe in leading by example, so I bring both humility and a strong sense of responsibility to the classroom; I understand that if I am not fully dedicated to their success, I cannot expect my students to thrive, therefore I take my responsibilities outside the classroom as seriously as those that exist within it. I will strive to earn my students' trust by maintaining an attitude of approachability, reaching out to encourage each individual with genuine warmth and acceptance, and engaging them with honest and thoughtful discussion. I endeavor always to provide clear direction, goals and explanations for every class activity, in order to ensure that my students are well-prepared and fully equipped to benefit from those lessons. Lastly, I rely on my own creativity and enthusiasm to bring joy and flexibility to the learning process, for it is the joy in learning that has driven me through my own education experience. That joy is what I most wish to impart to my students.

I have taught twenty classes on reading development, for students aged 4 to adult, and have an excellent understanding of everything from letter recognition, to phonics, to vocabulary, and complex comprehension issues. In addition, my career as a student has given me extensive skill in writing, literary analysis and basic composition. I also have some experience teaching English to speakers of other languages, as well as those with learning disabilities such as Dyslexia, Auditory Processing Disorder, high-functioning Autism, ADD and ADHD. I take special pleasure in working with those students who need extra support and encouragement, and understand very well that often what struggling learners need most is a boost in confidence, along with a set of simple, easy to use skills.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
