So far, my accomplishments in college have given me a strong background in math so I feel that I am qualified to be the liaison between the student and the subject. In high school, I tutored struggling Algebra students in my free time after the AP Calculus exam. I was also hired about a year ago onto a panel of math tutors. At MiraCosta College, I was able to complete all lower division math classes with near perfect grades and was awarded a scholarship for my achievements in mathematics. I am going into my senior year at UCLA studying Political Science, which consists of extensive reading and writing assignments, giving me great knowledge in abilities when it comes to reading, writing, proofreading, grammar, and history.
I am usually the student that fellow classmates turn to if they are having difficulty grasping a topic. In high school, I absolutely hated math and can relate to kids going through that period right now. I believe that a good, solid foundation in math starts with the teacher and environment in which it is introduced. I hope to bring the subject to them in a way that is less intimidating and more personal so that they can at least develop a working relationship with it. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Algebra is the foundation for the majority of mathematics. Being a math major, my knowledge in the foundation courses is strong. In high school, I tutored several algebra students. My tutoring style is to pinpoint where the misunderstanding is stemming from before moving on with them.
I was recommended by my Algebra 2 professor to become a tutor for her class. Algebra is the foundation for the majority of mathematics. Since high school, I have taken several classes regarding US History and find the subject extremely interesting. At UCLA, the History department is one of their strongest, in which I have taken two classes so far. One emphasized on the American West, covering American expansion since the 19th century and the other focused on the United States since 1945. I received A's in both of these classes. Previously to attending UCLA, I have taken two other US History classes since High School and have received exemplary grades in them as well.
I have taken all three semesters of Calculus and received near perfect grades in each. I have also excelled in calculus application classes, such as physics. I have experience helping out fellow classmates when they were struggling with a specific topic. My tutoring style is to get the student to visualize what is going on and connect it to real life.
I am currently going into my senior year at UCLA, working toward a B.A. in Political Science. So far, I have maintained a 3.7 in my major classes, which have covered a wide breadth of aspects of the subject, from world politics to Game Theory. I have studied the works of classic political thinkers, such as Aristotle, Rousseau, and Mill. In fact, I acquired A's on two papers last quarter regarding the works of Mill.
Calculus is my favorite branch of mathematics so I am very excited to help out any student that is interested in entering the subject. I will strive to make sure they are well prepared because I want them to exceed and be interested in continuing the calculus courses. My tutoring style is to make sure they are solid in the foundation courses such as algebra and trigonometry so they have the highest chance at excelling in and enjoying calculus.
As a Political Science major, many of my homework assignments consist of extensive amounts of reading. I am required to read both very abstract pieces, such as Aristotle's Politics, and very straight forward works, such as the Communist Manifesto. In order to succeed in the major, I must comprehend these pieces, and have succeeded in doing so, receiving exemplary grades in my major courses.
I have taken college level math through Linear Algebra and have received near perfect grades in all those classes. This implies that I have a very strong background in the foundation courses of mathematics. The SAT Math test consists of conceptual questions that cover a spread of these foundations. I believe because of my exposure to a wide range of math courses, I am able to help the students put the concepts together so that they can demonstrate this knowledge on those tests.
Trigonometry is something that I have been exposed to in several of the classes in my math endeavor, so I am well versed in the subject and how it applies to the various aspects of math and life. It is one of my strongest areas. It can be confusing and daunting because it is somewhat abstract so my tutoring style is to relate it to a real world example so that they can grasp it and apply it to every day life.
