(K-5) I have a half a year of experience as a youth educator in after school programs where I work daily with students of all different learning styles and personalities. In one-on-one tutoring, I can guide students in overcoming specific academic challenges and prepare them for weekly testing on core topics. I am familiar with new teaching approaches and strategies in step with district anticipation of the end-of-year Common Core examinations. I want to encourage all pupils to embrace storytelling--to see, feel, laugh and take morals from words and illustrations--and to create and express themselves through drawing, music, dance, speech and writing. I also enjoy presenting kids with problem-solving challenges and puzzles, such engineering vehicles and structures, sudoku, code-breaking, and especially chess.
My college coursework covered a variety of subjects--history, political science/government, literature, and film--all studies which satisfied my interest in American cultural history. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am a graduated humanities student from Stanford University who has experience working with young learners. I have volunteered as a tutor and activity supervisor at the Boys and Girls club, which serves primarily elementary age students. Also, I work closely with two siblings, a first-grader and a third-grader, on all aspects of their primary education. I strive to guide children through their work by emphasizing reasoning, helping them to grasp foundational concepts, and building confidence through independent thinking.
