I have been tutoring in an official capacity for almost two years and for much longer than that unofficially. I was the "go-to guy" among my school friends for math help! I started out volunteering at Oceanside High School, helping out students struggling with math. Over the past four years, I've been taking private clients. I have tutoring experience with geometry honors, algebra I and II honors, statistics, business math, SAT math, and the CAHSEE.
I've also worked as a tutor for Claire Burgener (an independent study school in Oceanside School District) where I got valuable experience teaching groups of students. I'm currently pursuing my teaching credential at CSUSM with the goal of becoming a high school math teacher. As part of the credential program, I have recently been doing classroom observation at various schools in the Oceanside School District.
References/Credentials/Legal: I can provide references from school staff by request.
I come from a math-focused family (my mom taught math at USD) and have a natural talent for connecting with students. Teaching math is something I've been exposed to my whole life, whether it was private instruction from a university math teacher (my mom) or helping friends and classmates.
Other Comments: My focus is on the conceptual level. I do not think it's helpful to simply have students memorize formulas with a "paint by numbers" approach. I truly believe it's best to understand the "why" of how to complete a problem. Not only does it give them more of a foundation for any future math education, it teaches them how to problem solve on their own so that, eventually, they don't depend on a tutor to learn tougher concepts. If I've tutored myself out of a job I consider that a great success! For me, it's really about the experience and reward of seeing students' progress.
I am flexible with pricing and I try to provide affordable, competitive rates. I am fine driving upwards of 20 miles to meet you at your home, though especially long drives may require compensation for gas (just a few bucks). Meeting me at my home is fine as well if that is preferred.
If you have any questions, please, feel free to contact me, and I will try to be as prompt and thorough as possible in answering them! You may have noticed my response rate is poor lately: this is mostly since Wyzant recently changed it so after 24 hours you are unable to respond. I'm quite busy between classes, tutoring, and classroom observation for my credential that I've just barely missed that 24 hour window on a few occasions. I am trying to improve at it by responding promptly regardless, though I will say your best chance of reaching me immediately is in the afternoon/evening. Brian is a terrific tutor. Our son always had A's in math but with the new Common Core, he started the year with a D. Brian has spent his own time researching Common Core and has helped our son understand how to answer the math questions by digging deeper into the problems. He is very patient and really lets our son work through the problem himself and then reviews and explains with him - which is a terrific way to learn! My son has gained his confidence back in math and is very thankful to have Brian as his tutor!
Brian has been a huge help so far with my daughter's math 2 class. He explains everything very clearly and had made a huge difference to her confidence in math in just a few weeks. We would highly recommend Brian.
Brian has been wonderful for my 12 year son!! Very dependable and extremely smart! My son enjoys working with Brian. I would definitely recommend him to anyone that need help in math.
Brian is a phenomenal algebra tutor for my son. It is a frustrating subject for him and my son raves about how Brian makes it so much easier to understand. Thanks Brian!
I needed help reviewing SAT math problems so we went over problems in the book and he helped me solve them. He was able to answer all of questions, explain things clearly, and I feel like I understand the material better. I feel more prepared for the SAT now.
Brian has been tutoring my son for the past few months. He asks questions and encourages my son in his math. We are looking forward to having him tutor the rest of the school year as Algebra 2 gets more complex.
Brian was the perfect tutor and helped my son a lot.. We will be hiring him again when my son runs into problems.
Brian was easy to communicate with, flexible, professional, and he helped my reluctant teenager feel comfortable with the whole tutoring thing. He was knowledgeable about the material, and most importantly, knows how to teach it. He went above and beyond in several ways to help out out. Many thanks Brian!!!
Brian has been working with my 8th grader on his common core advanced math. He is prompt, thorough, friendly, and explains things in a way my son can understand. He has helped my son bring his grade up!
Just had our first tutoring session with Brian. My grandson really clicked with him and he learned so much in just that one hour. I'm booking him for twice a week lessons as my grandson really wants to excel in Geometry. Brian is very patient and he explains things very well. The next day in class, my grandson was raising his hand and answering questions. He was finally participating and he actually gets his homework done before I get home now! We are both looking forward to his next session with Brian.
Update: We've now had several tutoring sessions with Brian and just love his style! My grandson is doing so much better in class and is really flourishing under Brian's guidance! He's a wonderful tutor!
Brian did a great job tutoring my son in Algebra II. Last year he struggled and ended up with a D both semesters. This semester he got an A, as well as an A on his final. Brian is on time, explains everything clearly, and is very easy to work with. We would definitely recommend him, and will use him again.
Bryan helped my daughter in College Algebra. Through few sessions, she gain much better understanding of the subjects, more skills in problem solving using tactical method, more skills with her calculator, faster and skillful in problem solving and dealing with different kinds of tricky questions that required techniques. From low scores she has now progressed to consecutive B's. Overall we're happy with Bryan.
Brian has been exceptional working with my son. He is patient, and encouraging! He even went out of his way to help my son review problems through text messages when he didn't have to! Exceptional!
I've been struggling with my math for quite some time, and Brian today helped me learn more math in 2 hours than I could learn myself within 10. He explained everything in a very clear manner, and when I wasn't sure on something, I felt totally comfortable about asking questions. He's really patient and makes you feel really at ease. Great tutor.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
