Universite Libre de Bruxelles (Master's)
I am a bilingual (English-French) American with an international background and years of experience in education and psychology. Mastering the written word was my first academic love, from earning a creative writing award in high school to writing an honor's thesis at Wellesley College. With a B.A. in psychology, I first worked in the field of law, where my work included correcting documents written by non-native speaking lawyers. I perfected my French living in Belgium for almost 11 years, where I obtained a master's in educational psychology.
I have worked in private practice completing educational assessments for children dealing with learning difficulties. This required producing complex written reports analyzing the problems at hand and presenting these along with solutions in clear and concise summaries. I also worked as an English teacher for Berlitz while living abroad, so I have received special training in how to teach foreign languages.
I began learning French in high school, so I understand how difficult this can be for students. Having obtained a near-native level of French and an almost perfect French accent after living with my Belgian family abroad, I am uniquely qualified to help other Americans master this beautiful language. I am a bilingual (English-French) American with an international background and years of experience in education and psychology. Mastering the written word was my first
Carolyn quickly assessed my rather strange French level and understood that I wanted assistance with conversation. She corrected me gently and reduced my anxiety about speaking at an upcoming event. I will request her again when another need arises. Merci Carolyn!
Carolyn is an absolutely fantastic French tutor with a great deal of knowledge and experience. Each and every lesson with her was enjoyable, and I learned quite a bit in a short period of time. I highly recommend her!
My 13 year old daughter loves French lessons with Carolyn. Carolyn has been very accommodating to our ever changing schedule. Also she has been able to provide some lessons over Skype which has been convenient when in person could not work out.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
All of my education and jobs throughout my career have required me to write in a correct, persuasive and polished manner. I wrote an honor's thesis in college which required impeccable academic writing. I have worked with non-native speakers to correct their documents in English, I have written comprehensive psychological reports for clients who consulted with me for testing on their children, and I have also worked extensively in marketing to improve the language of documents created for publicity purposes.
While living in Belgium, I worked for Berlitz teaching English to elementary school age children. In that position I learned how to teach language with an immersion approach. Since then, I have also tutored older clients in ESL.
Nearly 11 years of living and working in French-speaking Belgium have given me a fluency in French that is almost impossible to achieve by studying the language alone. Living abroad has given me the ability to understand how real people communicate in French in everyday situations, so I can give my students practical skills that other tutors may not be able to. Having completed a master's degree entirely in French, I am also no stranger to correct French grammar and writing conventions, and I can help my students master the more technical aspects of the language as well. Most importantly, I love the beauty of the French language and I want to help my students enjoy speaking and understanding the language as much as I do!
I have both a bachelor's and a master's in psychology, and I have extensive experience with research in this field. For both of my degrees I conducted research and wrote academic theses.
All of my previous and current work positions have required excellent writing skills. In my psychology private practice, I wrote comprehensive reports summarizing multiple tests and observations in a way that was clear to both parents and professionals. Currently in marketing, I have to write succinctly and convincingly to motivate new applicants to apply to the program I work for. I also have a passion for creative writing and receive special training through the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators, of which I am a member.
