"Never let yesterday's disappointments overshadow tomorrow's dreams."
I am graduate of U.C. Irvine (B.A. in Political Science) and have a Master's in Ed/Teaching Credential from Cal State San Marcos. Ten years ago, I was a elementary school teacher in Riverside City. I have also been an associate director of Sylvan Learning Center, Vista. Since 2005, I started my own business as a private tutor in San Diego county tutoring children and young adults ranging from first to twelfth grade. The past two years, I have been a math interventionist at SDJA and worked as a specialist at a school. I use effective teaching modalities customized to your child's specific learning needs. I also emphasize facilitating comprehension and understanding using real life applications, visual aids/models, and kinesthetic teaching methods. In other words, I have take on an approach to math that makes it easy to understand and NOT stressful.
For each lesson, I will create a lesson agenda, preview the work ahead of time, and enhance the skills/concepts with worksheets to make sure gaps in learning are filled. With my methods of teaching, your child will understand the "how" and the "why" rather than just teaching them the lesson in the book. My specialty is in assessing and dissecting where you or your child is having challenges and figuring out a way to eliminate that gap or learning deficit. With my experience and dynamic teaching style, you will see a difference in your child's attitude toward Math (and/or Chinese).
As part of my tutoring program, correspondence with your child's teacher is suggested so that I may better understand your child's needs/learning challenges/background. There is no extra fee for this service. For your convenience, I also offer tutoring in my home-office in Cardiff by the Sea if you should prefer.
Why wait another minute? Let's get started... "Never let yesterday's disappointments overshadow tomorrow's dreams."

Sharon is an amazing tutor. She currently teaches Algebra at the middle school level, so she has experience of knowing where students are most likely to start stumbling. Sharon is able to explain math concisely which helped my child to begin eliminating simple mistakes. My child advanced significantly in a short period of time. Most importantly, my child gained test confidence and got a 100% on a quiz, something she had not done all year. As a bonus, Sharon really enjoys teaching math.
Sharon is an excellent, knowledgeable, and very effective tutor. She has taught my daughter so much in only 2 short months since we started with her.
Sharon brought my daughter back to an above average grade in math after two (2) years of failing in math. She is great at finding out exactly what the problem is.
Quote from our student:
"I have Ms. Sharon tutor me once a week for two hours each session, and I can't even begin to describe how much she has helped me to improve academically AND self esteem-wise. Each week we meet in a comfortable environment of my choice, (usually we meet for coffee). We get right down to the work with a warm up page covering what I'm learning in school. I've never found it difficult to talk to my tutor, or ask questions. She makes it very easy and fun! I actually love talking to her, it's very one-on-one and personal. Since my first session, I've gone from an F grade to a B-, which has improved my self esteem quite a lot. I used to feel stressed and distant towards my math work and now it's just another class that I know I can pass. Ms. Sharon is a great choice for kids and teens who really fell behind in a class like I did."
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am a Chinese American woman born in Taipei, Taiwan where the the main dialect spoken is Mandarin Chinese. I spoke this language in my household until college. It was my first language, and English is my second- although, I do speak perfect English with no accent as I'm 100% bilingual. I was educated in reading and writing the Chinese language in weekend schools since I was 10 years old. I also took Chinese in college to perfect my reading and writing (as my speaking skills far exceeded the reading/writing). Furthermore, I travel back to my native country of Taiwan and to Mainland China annually to visit relatives. Currently, I teach Mandarin Chinese to young children privately in San Diego. I have been doing so for over 5 years using a program I developed with materials from both Taiwan and China. If you should need any additional information or would like me to speak in Mandarin on a video clip, please let me know.
