Writing is not rocket science but a process of drafting and revision. Writing is personal. My instruction doesn't follow the current educational theories and practices. But, every semester that I teach confirms that they are effective. My students see immediate improvement their writing, reading, and critical thinking skills. My studies writing studies and teaching experience combine to give me a unique approach to the writing process.
I've adapted my skills to the methods and techniques taught by Richard Marius, the former director of Harvard's Expository Writing program. The introduction to his manual, A Writer's Companion, explains that this course is "the only course required of all Harvard undergraduates." In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I approach the teaching of English from a writer's perspective. My advanced studies in creative writing helped me develop a view of literature and writing that emphasizes how we write and how understanding the form and structure of literature communicates as much of the author's mind as the content of the narrative.
The same principle applies to writing in any form. An understanding of how a writer can organize their thoughts leads the writer to discover new insights into the topic, and the ability to clearly and effectively communicate those insights to the reader.
I approach writing as a process of discovery. By grappling with the basics of grammar and diction and fitting those thoughts into words, the writer discovers how to clearly express the thought. At the same time, the writer discovers a clearer understanding of their thoughts.
The drafting process applies to all genres and enables the writer to discover how to fit the words into the poem, the short story, the essay, the novel…
