I'm recently retired after 37 years in elementary education. Two of those years were spent as a math advisor. My training as an advisor brought me to a deeper appreciation regarding the benefits in conceptual understanding. I found it exciting to lead students into thinking about and understanding the meaning behind a problem. I really believe that any student can succeed in math if they have a deep understanding of what's involved in each problem. I find that with that understanding in place, the student will almost always see a route to the solution. So, if understanding is there, the solution almost becomes secondary.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have 35 years of elementary classroom experience where I worked with 2nd to 6th grade students. During my career I taught reading and language arts in both Spanish and English. Near the end of my career I spent 2 years as a math advisor to elementary teachers. I've been retired for several years, but have kept active by volunteering at 2 different elementary schools, helping students with math and reading.
I was trained in a conceptual math approach, which led me to appreciate the value of thinking about how math works as well as visualizing and articulating an approach to a particular problem.
