B.A., University of California, Berkeley (Integrative Biology)
With my academic and practical experiences as a biology major student in University of California, Berkeley, I am fully prepared to teach students biology, chemistry and precalculus at a high school level. Although I will be a beginner in this job, my educational background has prepared me well for the role of a teacher/tutor. In particular, the major areas of my undergraduate studies include biochemistry, human physiology, genetics, immunology, and neurobiology. I also took algebra 1 and 2 and calculus courses during my high school years and two semesters of college-level math classes as a part of my major requirement courses.
For my teaching experience, I am serving as a Korean teacher in my church. Because I love being around kids and teens, this commitment is one of the most gratifying experiences I had in my life. I taught Korean letters and grammars, and to me, this teaching curriculum was a very rewarding experience in that I could help the children grow up bilingual without losing their native culture. By spending time with the children and their parents, I developed good communication skills, and learned to treat children with care and sympathy. With my love for interacting with children and teens combined with the strong interest in the biological and mathematical studies, I want to work as a teacher who encourages students to reach their academic goal and teaches them with great affection.
My excitement for having a positive influence on students’ learning experiences greatly motivated me to be a tutor. I am a person with a strong sense of responsibility and go very well with other people, so I will contribute enthusiasm and continuous effort for students' academic improvements. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I took Algebra 1, Algebra 2 and AP Calculus when I was in high school and got A's for those classes. After graduating high school, I furthermore took Math 1A and Math 1B in college, which prepared me with more advanced math skills. During my academic career, math has been one of my strongest subjects.
SAT Math encompasses various math skills including algebra, geometry and trigonometry, and through the school course works and SAT preparatory courses, I mastered the math skills necessary for SAT math section. On my SAT Math, I got a score of 780. I am capable of teaching the strategies for approaching different types of math problems.
