About Craig

Hello there!

My name is Craig S. I'm a recent graduate of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo where I got my Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry. My passion in this world is science, math, and teaching. Currently I'm teaching a chemistry lab at a high school!

I've been tutoring since I was in high school and throughout college. My specialties are high school chemistry and math ranging to college level chemistry courses, and I excel at working with children at any level. I strive to try and show students multiple different methods of how to do the same problem so they can find a method that clicks! My main long term goal with every student is to teach them how to study on their own and engage in critical thinking. There is nothing more I enjoy than the "Ah ha!" look a student gets when they finally understand a problem that has been giving them trouble.

Please feel free to contact me! My best time to tutor is whenever YOU need a tutor! I know that with only a couple sessions of tutoring your grade will improve!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

Algebra I is the basis for a world of math that is being opened to new students. As I took the class I was astounded by how basic algebra relates to the world around us. I push students to see the bigger picture of algebra I so it impacts how they see the world. I believe that when they see it in the world it will be easier to understand!

Algebra 2

Throughout my Biochemistry degree I found myself using more and more concepts that I had learned in Algebra II. It is the basis for learning calculus, and gives the students a larger repertoire for solving mathematical functions. I thoroughly enjoy breaking down multi-step problems that seem daunting to students into small bits that the student can easily grasp.

Biochemistry

Biochemistry is the very basis for how life around us works. A solid foundation is essential for continuing into higher level courses. Utilizing every science class in my degree I have developed an effective method for teaching students how the world around us works, but from a biochemical aspect. This method paired with quick lectures can turn the hardest parts of biochemistry into easily understood concepts.

Biology

I have been tutoring biology ever since I scored a 5 on AP Biology test my senior year of high school. Being tightly intertwined in my BS in Biochemistry, it is one of my favorite and strongest subjects that I tutor in.

Chemistry

Chemistry has been my passion since I first took Chemistry Honors in high school. From the first lab on I was hooked. After doing well on the AP test, I decided to start tutoring Chemistry, and eventually I pursued a degree in Biochemistry to continue chasing my passion. Using real world examples I break chemistry down into terms that are easily understood, and build upon that using my own teaching techniques that have been honed by years of chemistry tutoring.

Cooking

I've been cooking for over ten years now starting since I was 13. I truly believe that my love for the lab came from doing different experiments in the kitchen trying to create the perfect meal. Since then I have taken many cooking classes, and love to share food and the knowledge of how to make great food!

Elementary Science

I remember when I took my first science class I absolutely fell in love with the subject. I knew from that point on I would be doing something relating to science in my life. Elementary Science is so critical because it teaches children about how the world works, and is a pivotal subject in determining what their future interests may be. I aim to teach at the students level of understanding and to slowly push that level higher and higher with each session.

Geometry

Most people don't know this, but geometry is super critical in biochemistry. Still though, I recall how to do all of my proofs and many of the identities used in geometry. When teaching I try my hardest to show how what is being learned can be used in real life to give the concepts are better grounding for the student.

Microsoft PowerPoint

Slideshows are a vitally important tool for conveying information to a group of people. Throughout my undergraduate degree I have logged countless hours into PowerPoint. My endeavor is to not only teach how the program works, but also how to format information efficiently, while not making a boring PowerPoint that will put people to sleep! I can also help with making sure that your presentation with the slideshow goes flawlessly!
