California State University, Northridge (Music, Piano Performance)
I have been teaching piano privately since 1982, and I have 15 years of performing experience as a choral accompanist at a local private high school. I like to emphasize general musicianship training, gaining proficiency in piano fundamentals, such as scales and proper hand structure development. In training a student to become an accompanist, the main fundamental I stress is sight reading. I also take time to stress the value of persistence and patience with the process of learning to play a very challenging instrument.

Gerald continues to be an inspiration and an equally patient teacher to us for 2 years now. We really appreciate the invaluable experience he is able to provide.
Gerald goes in-depth with everything, so aside from learning what you're supposed to learn, you're equipped with knowledge that could help you if music is your passion. he responds to emails extremely quickly and is friendly upon meeting. my first time meeting him wasn't awkward at all, his presence felt very homey. Also, at the end of the lesson, he played a bit of a piano piece for my parents and I, and what he has written on his business card is true. He is a master of classical piano.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
My ear training qualifications consist of ear training as part of the package of musical skills for the degree of Bachelor of Arts in Music from California State University, Northridge. In order to receive my degree, I was required to pass tests in four ear training skill areas, specifically melodic dictation, rhythmic dictation, diatonic and chromatic harmonic dictation. These tests were passed. During the years following completion of my degree requirements, I consistently try to keep these skills at peak efficiency through various software ear training programs like EarMaster Pro and Auralia.
My educational background in music history consists of three required quarter courses of History of Western Culture Music at California State University, Los Angeles. The text used for this course was entitled "History of Western Music," by Donald J. Grout.
I later took a required course entitled the History of the Symphony Orchestra at California State University, Northridge, which consisted of in-depth study of the nine symphonies of Ludwig Van Beethoven.
I also took another required course entitled History of Music Theory, which studied in-depth the historical development of music theory from ancient Greece and subsequent development of tonal and atonal music theory principles.
As a pianist and piano teacher, I have 30 years of experience in choral and vocal accompanying at the high school level. This includes performing at various festival competitions with various choirs, concert choirs, men's and women's choirs. In 1982, I was a featured soloist at California State University, Northridge, performing the Schumann Piano Concerto.
