I began my teaching career when my oldest daughter's kindergarten teacher suggested I get a credential, since I worked in her classroom so successfully. It took me a couple of years to do, while caring for three children. My first job was a 6th grade position in a private school, where I worked for 4 years. An opportunity came to apply for a public school position, and I was hired as a 5th grade middle school teacher. After 4 years, I was transferred to 6th grade, to team-teach a group of 60 students. During this time I taught the math, science and P.E. During this time, I took part in numerous trainings and workshops. The job included planning, designing, implementing, teaching, assessing, communication with parents and administration, as well as forming a relationship with each child. I also completed a certificate in ESL, from USC. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
