About Ty

What I am is a writer who loves to teach the craft of writing. I have taught numerous college courses at the community college and university level, freshman and second-year students, in subjects from composition and literature to film and history. I love teaching and tutoring because I believe the skills of writing and reading are not only important in a person's development, but a source of pleasure and empowerment. One of writing's greatest teachers, John Gardner, spent hours of his personal time meeting with students to help them with their writing development - and he was a best-selling novelist and legendary professor! I honor that tradition and wish to help my students understand and succeed with English studies.

I often tell my students that writing is power. In our adult lives especially, we often cross paths with others whom we need to negotiate with or, in the name of fairness, defend ourselves against when misunderstanding occurs. Language gives us the ability to write letters to our politicians, advocate for our children in school, and communicate with friends and loved ones where subject matter is a challenge. Writing may help us express other feelings we have so that those around us can better understand who we are, and what we are trying to accomplish in our lives. Writing is a tool that can be so beneficial in our lives.

I have a BA in Literature with a minor in writing, and an MA in composition. I have a few publications across the spectrum of writing (poetry, fiction and travel journalism) and also host a blog for writers at Wordpress. I've taught freshman composition I and II, fiction writing, literature, film, and ancient history. My goal is to make learning fun, and funny, and for my love of writing and language to shine through.

For those students I work with who are in school I will happily work within the scope of your assignments, using the materials you are given by your regular instructor. For those who are not formally in school, my exercises are catered to challenge you at the cusp of where you're at and the next level. In this way you can see progress for yourself. I will also provide periodic assessments.

I am especially open to online clients. If you are more comfortable working from home on the computer please consider my services. I am also willing to meet at the library or at the student's home.

My cancellation policy is liberal (2 hour notice). Ask me for more details on missed sessions and make ups. I offer a free initial consultation meeting and can schedule lessons shortly thereafter.

I look forward to helping you succeed. Please contact me with questions or to schedule your first lesson!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Writing

I was an admissions and records official for fourteen years in Nevada System of Higher Ed. I have taught English and humanities courses part time during those years. I am a published writer (fiction, poetry, and travel), have written grants, newsletters, and MOUs. I was executive director of the Point Arena Lighthouse for two years. Point Arena Lighthouse Keepers, Inc. is a 501(c)3 non-profit. I also worked in science for Naked Whale Research, a killer whale research non-profit, and unit E, a non-profit supporting independent artists which I founded in 2012.
