Hi! My name is Kelly and I am an Australian native living in the Ventura County supporting my husband through his Naval Officer career.
I have a Bachelor of Education from the University of Sydney (Australia) and a Bachelor of Science in Forensic Biology from the University of Technology, Sydney (Australia). In 2011, I completed my Masters of Science in Biology at Old Dominion University in Norfolk VA.
My experience extends to high school, having taught grade levels 9-12 in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. I also taught IB (International Baccalaureate) Biology, which is an excellent and challenging curriculum for all involved. I have also tutored college students (Senior Year) in Anatomy and Physiology, HIV/AIDS seminar and Virology.
My strong and concrete teaching areas are Biology, Chemistry (Middle School and Grade 9 & 10), Microbiology, Anatomy and Biochemistry. Some examples of relevant coursework from my Bachelor's/Master's degrees are: Pharmacology, Vector Borne Diseases, Virology, Molecular and Genetic Lab Research on Tick Pathogens, Microbial Pathogenesis, Biomedical Science 1 & 2, Anatomical Pathology, Haematology, Immunology, Transfusion Science, Investigation of Human Remains, Comparative Primate Anatomy, DNA Profiling and Human Anatomy & Physiology.
What makes my Science coaching effective for my students is that I make Science fun, exciting and relevant to real-world application. I have loads of interactive teaching materials that a lot of my former students found extremely helpful and led them to the "AH HA! I get it!" moments. My past students in Washington DC have seen a tremendous jump in their grades after working with me, whether it be for test prep or understanding concepts for assignments.
I have worked in Anatomy and Physiology research as well as in a Pathology lab. This real-life work experience has allowed me to view Science from a different perspective and exposed me to some knowledgeable and professional people.
My personality is warm, friendly and motivating with a dash of tough love. I want the best outcomes for you or your child, and I do this by preparing material, focusing on improvements and clear communication.
Please send me a message if you would like to know more about my coaching services!
NB: To be fair to myself and my other students, I require 24 hours' cancellation notice for cancellation of scheduled lessons; otherwise, the full lesson fee will be charged. This includes no-shows. Kelly helped my son work through and better understand buffers. She also provided relevant example problems and course material that was very helpful for the lesson and will help him in the future.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have taught grade 10 Biology, which had a Genetics topic. I also taught IB Biology, which had a Genetics topic as well (for Standard Level). My background is in Forensic DNA profiling.
