About Jack

I am an experienced tutor of basic English, with California teaching credentials in English Language Arts and Literature.

After a 30-year career as a professional technical writer and test engineer, I have enjoyed five years of one-on-one tutoring in the Ventura County Adult Literacy Program through the Camarillo public library. My earlier years of teaching were spent instructing students in English composition and literature while working on my advanced degrees.

My teaching philosophy is: focus on the basic elements of communication in English to develop your writing style. By mastering the essentials of writing (conversational sentence structure and grammar), students can improve both style and presentation of their ideas. Writing style comes from a clear and forceful presentation of unique ideas.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Desktop Publishing

I have worked for 20+ years as a Technical Writer for corporations such as Philips Medical, Reuters, and Retix. In creating technical documentation for these corporations, I used the FrameMaker desktop publishing software. For other jobs, including contract work, I used Word.

English

Please see my WyzAnt public profile for my qualifications and teaching experience.

Microsoft Outlook

For the last ten years of employment (as a technical writer and test engineer for Philips Medical), we used Microsoft Outlook as our email. I am familiar with all aspects of operation of the program: creating mail, adding attachments, and maintaining folders associated with the program. On our tower (Windows XP) at my residence, I am the administrator for Outlook Express, where I have configured that version of the application.

Microsoft Windows

In my career as a technical writer, I worked in UNIX and Macintosh environments. However, since working for Philips Medical as a technical writer and software test engineer since 1998, I worked exclusively with Microsoft Windows operating systems: NT, 2000, XP, Vista, Windows 7, and now Windows 10. I am familiar with installing, configuring, and imaging all of those Windows environment.

Microsoft Word

During my 30 years as a professional writer, I developed user manuals and test procedures with desktop publishing software such as FrameMaker, Interleaf, and MS Word, using the full capabilities of the programs. Microsoft Word, for example, allows you to develop formatting templates for font styles, headlines, tables, and artwork captions. It also supports automatic features such as indexing, tables of contents, and numbered steps. For longer papers and documents, these automatic features save time and effort. In both the Macintosh and Windows environments I am familiar with all of these advanced features as well as the basics and can teach you to unlock the power of these word-processing applications.

Proofreading

My experience as a proofreader has been developed in both the academic and the business environments. What is most impressive today are the tools available for proofreading in current word-processing and publications software: spellchecker, grammar check, search and replace, etc. With digital format, there is almost no excuse for a proofreading error.

As an undergraduate, I was news editor and associated editor of my high school and college newspapers and as a graduate student I submitted class papers that had to be proofread carefully to earn top marks. When I taught Technical Writing at the university level, I stressed how important proofreading was, especially on letters of application.

As a professional technical writer for 20-plus years, I had to prepare engineering documents and technical manuals for publication. Proofreading is an essential part of the publication cycle. Digital software certainly helps to take a great deal of the tedium out of that process.

Writing

I am an experienced tutor of basic English, with California teaching credentials in English Language Arts and Literature.

After a 30-year career as a professional technical writer and test engineer, I have enjoyed four years of one-on-one tutoring in the Ventura County Adult Literacy Program through the Camarillo public library. My earlier years of teaching were spent instructing students in English composition and literature while working on my advanced degrees.

My teaching philosophy is: focus on the basic elements of the subject, for example, communication in English. By mastering the essential principle of \writing (conversational sentence structure), students can improve the expression of their unique ideas. The purpose of writing is to communicate one's ideas, as clearly and as forcefully as possible.
