About Kathy

I am a very experienced high school teacher who has taught every level from remedial reading to Advanced Placement U.S. History and Government. Whatever the level or subject, I am an inquiry-based teacher who relies on human interest stories, issues, and historical context to help students organize and personalize information. For example, I would use excerpts of Frederick Douglas' autobiography to illustrate what life was like for slaves and I would use quotes from Abraham Lincoln to underline the political and economic ramifications of freeing the slaves. This would be used to figure out how we ended up in a Civil War.

My most recent teaching job included teaching Civics and Economics for college prep and honors seniors, Social Science Department Chairmanship, and teaching AP US History, but I have taught every level of high school English and US History. I love learning and am always intrigued by creating interesting ways to encourage intellectual curiosity. For example, I love to use a debate format to understand both sides of an issue such as whether the US should have dropped the atomic bomb on Japan.

I pride myself in having a good rapport with students and am therefore confident in my abilities as an SAT prep tutor for reading, writing and single subject exams.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

I am qualified to teach American History because I have taught it for ten years including Advanced Placement U.S. History. I can organize it thematically and sneak in the chronology. For example, if we were studying women's suffrage, I would start with Abigail Adams in the early 1800's and trace progress to the present with such amazing trail blazers as Eleanor Roosevelt in the 1930's and 1940's.

CBEST

I passed the CBEST several years ago without any problem. The test is divided into three parts: math, reading and writing. A very adequate test prep booklet comes with the test registration materials. By going over the booklet, it is easy to detect weaknesses. I have twenty five years experience teaching all but the math; however, I scored highest in the math section and would have no trouble teaching math at that level.

College Counseling

As the senior Social Studies teacher at a private college preparatory, I was often the person to proofread my students college essays. I collaborated with the college counselor to fine tune essays. Having been called upon many times to write recommendations for my students in the college application process, I am very familiar with what colleges are looking for in their applicants.

Study Skills

I spent twenty-five years as a classroom teacher in English /Social Studies. For five years I was a home school teacher for students who could not attend classes for medical reasons. With my homeschooled students all I did was help them organize the assignments they needed to complete. Strategies for completing assignments made by me or their classroom teacher were my main focus with students.
