About Laine

First and foremost I am a teacher/facilitator/guide: I have assisted people of all ages in a vast array of subjects, including ecology, sea kayaking, rock climbing, writing, Permaculture, falconry, Shakespeare (reading comprehension), personal growth/development, mountain biking skills, archery, sustainable edible home landscaping, basic bicycle maintenance, study habits, and of course biology and English (I hold degrees in and am published in both fields). Currently, as well as tutoring a variety of subjects, I own a business in which I teach adventure motorcyclists how to handle large displacement motorcycles on unpaved roads. I have worked with students ranging in age from 6 to about 70. The broad reach of my personal experience often allows me to present unique analogies, which not only help students grasp concepts which are new to them, but keep them alert and engaged as well. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Biology

Laine MacTague is a published wildlife biologist and has work experience in microbiology as research oenologist for Sebastiani Vineyards. Currently, Mr. MacTague uses his understanding of ecology as a Permaculture designer and consultant.

CBEST

Laine - who tutors reading, mathematics, and writing, passed the CBEST in 2012: As well as having experience helping students with the subjects covered by the test, his successful experience with the test itself assures that you will benefit from test-specific study techniques as well.

Study Skills

I have taught study skills to virtually every one of my students, in the process of tutoring or teaching another subject of interest to them. My presentation of study skills is tailored to individual students, and informed by my studies as a course facilitator for Four Winds, Inc. of the various ways people learn, information acquired in preparation to become an in-class aide for dyslexic & other students at Sonoma State University, and my own experience in studying a broad array of subjects in numerous educational venues.

Writing

I am a published poet, freelance (non-fiction) writer, journalist, and wildlife research biologist. My broad writing experience enables me to help you with any writing project and to tutor students in writing for almost any field.
