About Geoff

Hello there!

Thank you for looking to potentially have me help you reach your learning goals. Here is a little bit of my background for you to look over.

I have over 25 years' experience in special visual effects. After graduating with a degree in animation and visual arts, I started a creature effects studio, where I designed characters, creatures, bodysuits, animatronics, stop motion puppets and various TV shows and feature films. In the late 1990s I turned my attention to visual effects and and since then have been part of projects such as "Unit Zero", "Shadowhunters", "MacGyver", "Point Break", "Dallas," "Longmire," "Zookeeper," "Grownups," "Bucky Larsen: Born to be a Star," "From Prada to Nada," "Area 51," "Mirrors," "Paul Blart: Mall Cop," "The Grudge 3," "Bedtime Stories," "Punisher: War Zone," "Basement Jack," "X-Men: the Last Stand," "Terminator: The Sarah Conner Chronicles," "Knight Rider," "CSI Miami," "CIS: NY," "NCIS: Los Angeles," "The Good Wife," "The Big C," "Prison Break," "3lbs," "Vanished" and countless others.

I supervised and ran visual effects departments for several companies before starting my own studio, co-founding another, based in Calabasas, California. I am a kid at heart when it comes to cool visual effects and whether you are simply struggling with opening Photoshop, retouching photos, learning how to edit video or are the new George Lucas starting out on your first student film, I can help you. Rather than telling you how to do something, I will give you the tools to learn how to achieve your goals and prepare you to keep learning the tools of the trade.

I have a Bachelors of Science in Animation. When I was starting out, a few people took the time to teach me, but they were hard to find. I therefore started my tutoring business with that in mind, cognizant that help with these projects is hard to find.

Here is some more software/hardware specific information about my background - I have been in the art/design/entertainment industry for over 20 years. I have a mastery of Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe After Effects, Adobe Premiere, Autodesk Maya, Autodesk Mudbox, ZBrush, Modo, Mari and Mocha Pro. I have extensive skills in graphic design, visual design, film and television production, 3D, compositing, matte painting and set extensions.

I have been using the Macintosh since 1985. I have worked with all the of the iterations of the platform, including but not limited to beta testing software, tearing down systems and rebuilding them with better parts, being a registered Apple Developer and the sheer love of the machines and platform.

To reiterate, when I was just starting out in the design and film industry, there were very few people who took the time to work with me and teach me what I need to be successful. They were hard to find. Now that I am in a position to help others, I have made it a point to deliver the best help possible and work with students and individuals who are really serious about learning what I can teach.

My schedule is very flexible and I look forward to working with you and helping you achieve whatever goals you have in learning the software, hardware or professional disciplines. I am equally happy to work with any one who wants to learn new things for a hobby as well.

I travel to students in the convenience of their own homes, studio or at a public location such as a Starbucks or local library. I mainly operate out of the West Valley but will consider traveling to West Los Angeles, Santa Monica, Venice, Burbank, Studio City, Glendale and Pasadena.

I look forward to making your project as cool as it can be.

Please contact me. I am happy to develop a custom learning plan for you and your goals.

"Excellent instructor"

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Adobe Photoshop

As a design professional with over 25 years in the entertainment industry, I have a vastness amount of Adobe experience. I have been using Adobe Photoshop since 1995 (Photoshop 3) as well as Adobe Illustrator (Illustrator 4) and Adobe After Effects (After Effects 4).

I have taken the knowledge I gained with using these applications professionally and began training students at the high school and college level through UCLA, UCLA Extension, Columbia College Hollywood and even developed a summer workshop designed and geared towards middle school and high school students.

I am also a veteran of the film and television industry and still put all the concepts I teach to use in my every day job as a visual effects supervisor.

Animation

I have a Bachelors of Science in Animation. I have been working in 3D and animation since 1995 where I worked at Disney and then when I worked at Warner Bros. starting in 1999. I work in 3D and animation on a daily basis. I have extensive background in 3D modeling, texturing, character rigging, lighting and character animation.

Graphic Design

I attended UCLA for design and visual arts in early 1990. It was there that I developed my love for type, color and layout. At that time we were creating everything by hand and not on the computer. It wasn't until 1994 that I made the transition and started working on the computer to design logos and campaigns for The Walt Disney Company. My design background coupled with my animation background really helped me move along in my career. I ended up teaching at UCLA and USC form 1997-2002.

Macintosh

I started working with the Macintosh in 1985. Before that I was on a Apple II. My love affair with Apple started very early. I became obsessed with the platform and what could be done with it. As an artist and designer, the Mac was the professional tool of choice. I have owned almost every iteration of this system and have worked with every version of the Mac OS. I am able to open up a Mac and upgrade parts to boost the systems to fit the needs of the ever changing entertainment industry and software industry.

Video Production

I have been a film and television professional for the past 15 years. Coupled with my design and animations backgrounds, I have worked on and been involved with a lot of high level television shows and feature films as an artist, supervisor and producer. My last role was with a pilot for a television show where I was the Visual Effects Supervisor and on-set supervisor. That means I was involved from the pre-production planning stages, through production, post-production and final delivery. Before that I was a Supervising Producer of Visual Effects for two seasons on a network television series. I am very knowledgable in every aspect of what it takes to make a tv show ro movie.
