About Marshall

I am a retired teacher, who has worked for the Los Angeles Unified School District for over forty years teaching Chemistry, Biology, and Physics at regular and Advanced Placement levels. I was a Master Teacher who trained teachers how to work with a diverse student population, teaching students with varying learning styles, and was an administrator and curriculum writer. I helped create the Academic Decathlon and helped shape the Mentor Teacher Program for the District. I have also been a Director of Admissions and teacher trainer for private and parochial schools and have had my own tutoring and academic and college advisement service for several years, which included test preparation for the S.A.T., A.C.T., G.M.A.T. and G.R.E. standardized tests, and college admissions applications.

It has been my experience that teaching in a one-on-one setting is most effective since the teacher and student can directly engage in a dialogue that will bring greater understanding to a subject. As a retiree, having worked in Education for over 40 years has allowed me to quickly identify a student's learning style, strengths and weaknesses, so I can teach the subject in a way best suited for them. Also, private tutoring provides a less stressful environment than the classroom, and provides a warm and friendly setting with which the student can ask questions and not feel embarrassed or overwhelmed and they can learn at a pace that promotes their success. My teaching style and decades of experience allow me to know the student in such a way that learning difficulties can be identified and overcome, so the student can be successful and gain confidence.

I taught High School level Biology, Chemistry, and Physics (Basic - Advanced Placement), for the entirety of my teaching career. I am experienced at knowing what students find difficult in the various science subjects and have, over the years, developed teaching strategies to allow them to succeed. My teaching philosophy involves developing a student that can become independent, self-motivated, and enjoy learning.

I enjoy reading literature and compositions and analyzing literary styles and their effectiveness. I have tutored the S.A.T. and A.C.T. for many years and have developed successful teaching techniques that have produced improved and high scores among my students. Also, I have taught English to High School students for college credit in special programs at UCLA, and understand the difficulties of comprehending and evaluating written text.

I am an experienced instructor who truly enjoys tutoring and helping students be successful at mastering subjects they find difficult. I encourage you to contact me to set up an appointment so that I can help you achieve competency in any subject that is problematic for you. I am very skilled at enabling you to attain mastery of a subject.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
