About Lalita

I am an Ivy League university graduate, university lecturer, and academic tutor. With over a decade of experience tutoring and teaching hundreds of students, I specialize in tailoring lessons to the individual needs of each student. I am kind, patient, encouraging, and truly care about the success of my students. Having received an A in AP Calculus (while attending Cleveland Humanities Magnet HS), I can understand your Math coursework and explain it to you effectively.

I have worked for various SAT tutoring companies, read many SAT guide books, learned lots of tricks, and developed many new expert strategies of my own! Here are my scores: Writing-800/800 (99%-ile), Reading 800/800 (99%-ile), Math-780/800 (99%-ile) -- Superscore: 2380. I can help you score higher on the Writing, Reading, and Math sections of the SAT! Studying for the SAT is just like preparing for any sport: it requires drills and practice, practice, practice with REAL SAT questions. In order to score high, you need to get into the minds of the test makers.

I just focus on the areas in which you are struggling (or need review) and give you detailed, thorough explanations. Since you are my only student, I have the time to answer your individual questions, rather than having to move on to the next topic quickly. We can decide to skip over questions that are easy for you and focus on ones that are giving you problems.

MY PHILOSOPHY: Individualized attention - as with all of my lessons, I continually adapt my instruction and materials to a student's particular needs, goals, and skill-set. I use my teaching experience and creative problem-solving abilities to tailor lessons to improve and reinforce students' weak spots. You won't find that in a mass-marketed, cookie-cutter class!

In addition to my experience as a professor, I also enjoy working with children--helping them understand and complete their homework assignments so that their parents can rest after a long day of work.

I earned my MA from Columbia University in English and Comparative Literature. Before that, I received my BA from UCLA with a major in American Literature and Culture and minors in Comparative Literature and Asian American Studies. I have experience as a college lecturer in the Asian American Studies and English Departments at Cal State University Northridge (CSUN). Finally, I have a passion for teaching/tutoring because it is a joy to help struggling students finally connect with what they are trying to learn.

In addition, I have also been a literacy tutor for the Los Angeles Public Library for 4 years and I have been teaching ESL and Thai language for over 10 years.

I also see myself as a lifelong learner and love studying foreign languages, such as Thai (which I also teach), French, Italian, Mandarin Chinese, German, and American Sign Language. I have certificates in: Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) from TEFL Paris; Le Cours de Langue et Civilisation Francaise de la Sorbonne from The University of Paris IV; and The Advanced Study of Thai (AST) from Chiang Mai University.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

What students often find difficult about Algebra is that it moves beyond numbers to symbols (called variables). I can help you understand what they mean and how they interact with other numbers, as well as the different laws, like the Distributive Law and Associative Law. Contact me and I can help demystify Algebra 1 for you once and for all!

Elementary (K-6th)

I am an Ivy League university graduate, university lecturer, and professional tutor. I have over three years' experience working with elementary school students on their homework assignments. One of the hardest parts of tutoring this subject is the variety and depth of projects and assignments teachers require. My strength is coming up with a systematic strategy to get the assignment done and then helping the student work from start to finish.

Students this age often have difficulty staying on task, but they also need to be able to talk about their thoughts and feelings. I like to balance being friendly and keeping them on task.

English

I have an MA in English and Comparative Literature from Columbia University and a BA from UCLA. In addition, I taught College Writing courses at Cal State Northridge (CSUN) for 8 semesters. I am able to tutor essay writing, comprehension, SAT Test Prep (All Sections), literature studies, and more! I can work with students K - adult.

ESL/ESOL

In addition to my BA and MA in English Literature, I also have TEFL certification from TEFL Paris and have taught many students from different countries, accents, and backgrounds.

Geometry

Geometry is all about shapes and lines. I think that what students find hard about it are all of the laws (theorems and postulates). But once you understand them, they become like second nature and you see how clues logically lead to conclusions!

Phonics

Phonics is a passion of mine because I know that it is a key component to becoming an independent reader. Growing up bilingual, speaking both English and Thai, I learned two different writing systems with different sounds and how they are written. I have also taken "Intro to Linguistics" and "The History of the English Language" courses at Columbia University, which went extensively over phonetics, or the study of sounds.

More recently, I have also tutored my nieces (ages 6 and 8) in phonics and reading comprehension, using the "Hooked on Phonics" workbooks. It's a lot of fun for all of us and I saw them gain reading skills, one sound at a time. Also, as a literacy and ESL tutor/teacher, I have taught adults how to recognize and read the sounds of the English language as well.

SAT Math

Studying for the SAT is just like preparing for any sport: it requires drills and practice, practice, practice with REAL SAT questions and coaching from someone like me, who can explain how/why the SAT test-makers decide which answers are right or wrong.

I scored a 680/800 (90th-percentile) on the Math SAT Section and know that it primarily tests skills in Algebra 1, Geometry, Probability, and a bit of Algebra 2 graphing/functions. As someone who got an A in AP Calculus in high school, I am very skilled at these topics.

I am particularly good at helping to raise scores of students who struggle with math, as many math/science majors can get frustrated with having to explain such "easy" math that they may skip over steps that they expect you to understand.

In addition, the Math Section of the SAT is not all about how well you know math, there are shortcuts, tricks, and strategies that apply to multiple choice elimination, marking key information, drawing diagrams, etc., that I can teach you.

Let me help you score higher on the SAT Math Section!

SAT Reading

Studying for the SAT is just like preparing for any sport: it requires drills and practice, practice, practice with REAL SAT questions and coaching from someone like me, who can explain how/why the SAT test-makers decide which answers are right or wrong.

This is the SAT section that many students fear the most--because there is so much reading! Well, I'm here to tell you that you can break up the reading section into bite-sized chunks and get more points in less time. I will show you why the correct answer choices are not just "random," but exact. On top of that, I will teach you how to answer the sentence completion questions, even if you don't know all of the vocabulary words!

I received a 770/800 (99th-percentile) on the Reading Section, with an updated score coming soon.

Let me help you understand and score higher on the Critical Reading Section of the SAT!

SAT Writing

Studying for the SAT is just like preparing for any sport: it requires drills and practice, practice, practice with REAL SAT questions and coaching from someone like me, who can explain how/why the SAT test-makers decide which answers are right or wrong.

Having scored a 780/800 (99th-percentile) on the SAT Writing section, I know what the test covers front and back. The multiple choice section only tests a limited number of rules that it recycles over and over, and the essay portion can be (and should be) prepared for long before you step into the test room and see the prompt!

I can help you become familiar with this test and learn how to score higher than you have before!

Study Skills

Organization, Time-Management, Touch-Typing, Speed Reading: These are just a few of the habits that lead to successful study skills. Through a consultation session, I can evaluate your current study habits and give you advice on how to create a more efficient learning environment and schedule.
