About Laura

I am a writer and historian. My mother, who was a journalist/novelist/author of children's books, always proofread my papers, making corrections and notes -- so I grew up being edited. This has served me well.

Because I am a writer, I could impart some of the English language skills I have relied on. I have a good eye for spelling, grammar, sentence structure and re-writing -- skills that are valuable in many forms of communication.

My degree is in English Literature and English History. I earned my M.A. in 19th century history, which has given me insight into the social history, art, theater and literature of the Victorian Age. I always enjoyed studying history, and can share my enthusiasm. I have an excellent memory and can discuss people, dates and events.

I would encourage students to embrace subjects they are drawn to and will use, far beyond school. Clearly I am the product of a liberal arts education.

While I have never taught professionally, I have worked with young writers, teaching them to edit, write copy, press releases and pitch letters. Professionally, I am an arts publicist, mainly for theater -- and that makes me helpful with topics pertinent to plays, playwrights, musical theater, and dramatic criticism.

I would be attuned to students looking for help with creative and persuasive writing, as well as analysis of literature, history and drama. I'd be pleased to offer guidance, suggestions and examples; put my own education to some use.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Theatre

Theatre is the world that I inhabit. I have been a lyricist, a publicist, and a producer of small shows in New York, London, Edinburgh, Minneapolis and San Francisco. I've worked in the PR departments of major repertory theatres, as well as representing shows off Broadway and in cabaret venues.

I have a Master's Degree in English History and Theatre History, and I have worked in promoting the arts for decades. I have seen many, many shows on Broadway, in the West End, in regional theatres, and on the Fringe, including a number of outstanding dramas and musicals from recent decades. Chances are I personally knew some of the actors, musicians and other artists who created these shows!

My former romantic counterpart is a Broadway conductor, and I have a letter of reference from Sir Tim Rice, British lyricist of many musicals including Evita and The Lion King.

It's safe to say that I have a great love for, and working knowledge of theatre, with a particular passion for musicals. I've spent my professional life working on behalf of theatre, and I can discuss many elements of it with expertise and great enthusiasm.
