About Kathy

I have over 20 years of classroom teaching experience at all elementary grade levels, and have worked at some of the top public, private and parochial schools in the Bay Area. For 14 of those years I also worked as a private tutor.

I tutor out of my home in Burlingame where I have a dedicated office set up that serves as my instructional center. I tutor K-6 students in all subject areas, help develop specific study skills that might be needed, and provide enrichment for those who have an existing solid foundation of knowledge in one or more particular areas. I also provide ISEE test prep for those interested in attending a private middle school.

When I first work with a student I assess their abilities both in terms of strengths and areas of needed improvement, and then create individual lessons for them as a guide to help them on their path towards success. If it is necessary I will collaborate with the student’s teacher(s) so that any challenges the student faces in the classroom are fully understood, and related background information can be folded into lesson development. All of my curriculum is aligned with California Common Core Standards.

Students I work with have a diversity of needs. Some may come in feeling inadequate in a subject area, some may have learning disabilities, and yet others might have self-esteem issues. By working side-by-side with each of them, and providing praise and positive reinforcement, the students soon develop an "I can do it" attitude and in the process develop critical thinking skills. There are also students who come seeking a broader knowledge base (enrichment) in a particular area, and through exploration, reading and discussion they are able to grasp additional concepts and ideas and formulate expanded thinking patterns.

As for my background, I most recently worked at Stratford School in Santa Clara, teaching Kindergarten and 2nd Grades. Prior to that, I spent eight years teaching 5th grade at Kids Connection Elementary School, a private school in Foster City. Not only do I have a strong teaching background, but I also have vast experience in curriculum development as well as having served multiple roles on educational steering committees while teaching Kindergarten and 1st grade in the San Bruno Park School District.

In 2012 I received my Master's Degree in Education as well as my Administrative Credential from Notre Dame de Namur University in Belmont, CA. I received my Bachelor's Degree in Education from the University of the Pacific (Stockton, CA) and have a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential.

I have two children: a daughter who is a recent graduate of Marquette University, and a son who is a student-athlete at Boston College.

I look forward to working with your child and helping them reach their full potential.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Common Core

I am a certified teacher in grades K-6. Having taught in both public and private schools, I have firsthand knowledge of the Common Core curriculum. In addition, I am tutoring students on a daily basis in Common Core math, and I use the same terminology and supplemental materials that they are using in school.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a California Elementary Teaching Credential and have been teaching in both public and private schools for over 20 years. I have taught all grade levels from K-6 in all my years and am comfortable and experienced in all subject areas. I have also been tutoring for over 14 years for K-6 students in all subject areas as well.

Elementary Math

I have taught every grade level from K-6 and enjoy teaching math in a hands-on format. When I am teaching a new concept or reviewing a concept the student has learned in school, I use a lot of manipulatives and show a lot of examples so the children understand the process of how to solve a problem. I also like to use a lot of learning games within my tutoring sessions to ensure the students have mastered the concept being taught.

Elementary Science

I have taught K-6 science as part of a daily curriculum. I do provide the students with a lot of examples as well as integrating learning games into my tutoring as well.

Grammar

I have taught grammar. I do provide the students with a lot of examples as well as integrating learning games into my tutoring as well.

Handwriting

As part of my credentialing program, we were required to take a handwriting class so we knew the proper techniques of how to teach children how to print, write in D'Nealian, as well as cursive. I am a credentialed teacher with a master's degree and over 20 years of teaching experience.

ISEE

I have tutored several students to help them prepare for the lower level ISEE test. I use a variety of test prep materials as well my own 5th grade math, reading and writing resources to ensure they are fully prepared on the test date. I also administer a practice test to all of the students so they have a good sense of the format and timing of the actual test.
Having taught 5th grade in a private school for 8 years, a number of the students applied and were accepted in the local private schools in the area, and I have a good knowledge of the application process and am willing to offer assistance and guidance to both the parent and the student to make the application process go smoothly.

Phonics

I have taught Kindergarten and first grade for a number of years and have proven techniques to teach children beginning sounds, ending sounds, blends and vowel digraphs. We break words into syllables and try to find the patterns in words to help improve their reading as well as their spelling skills.

Proofreading

I use the Daily Language Review and Daily Paragraph Editing curriculum with the students so they learn to find and edit their own errors within their writing.

Reading

I have a love of reading and I try to instill that passion on the students I work with. When I work with a student on reading skills, I don't just want them to read and answer the comprehension questions, I want them to really try to find the deeper meaning within the book by using critical thinking skills. When I work with a student who has difficulty reading, I rely heavily on phonics. We go over the letter sounds, blends, and digraphs. We break words into syllables and try to find the patterns in words to help improve their reading as well as their spelling skills.

I do have a complete library in my tutoring office where the children are welcome to check books out and take them home, or I will go to the public library and check out books for them that may be interesting for them.

Social Studies

Being a credentialed teacher and having taught in grades K-6 for 20 years, I am very knowledgeable in the different concepts taught in Social Studies. I also have a lot of resources such as non-fiction books that I can use to help the students understand the unit of study. I also use technology to look up pictures, facts or videos to help them understand the concepts.

Spelling

I teach the students different spelling patterns, vowel, diagraph and blends so they will become successful spellers.

Study Skills

I have been tutoring for over 14 years, and I have taught students how to organize their work, prioritize their homework and set up a schedule for studying for tests. Being a credentialed teacher and having taught in grades K-6 for 20 years, I have had much success in teaching study skills to the students I have worked with.

Vocabulary

I have worked as a full time teacher as well as a substitute teacher for over 20 years and have taught every grade level from K-6 and have taught vocabulary as part of the daily curriculum. I will teach students to use context clues to figure out unfamiliar words and also use Wordly Wise and Daily Academic Vocabulary to help students increase their vocabulary.
