I favor instructional methods that place the student at the center of the learning process, allowing her or him to experience what it is like to think like a scientist. My students will not only understand how to fulfill their intellectual potential in learning biology, but also discover a discipline that makes us wonder and gives us a childlike inclination for play and joy.
When I am not learning or teaching, I spend my free time with my two young boys. My passions are buying science books, yoga and traveling. I have lived in many countries such as China, Congo and Algeria. I am a certified biology teacher with experience in university research and veterinary sciences. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I enjoy teaching Biology and AP biology because it presents students with not only an in-depth survey of the concepts of biology, but also provides them with an opportunity to analyze how living systems work and why they work that way. Emphasizing the themes of biology throughout the year allows students to understand the connections between the different topics of study and to see the unity and diversity of life on Earth and the evolutionary processes that have led to life's current state of organization and complexity. I also like to show students that our current knowledge base did not happen overnight, but rather by a continuous accumulation of ideas developed by the historical processes of scientific observation and experimentation, and future generations will build upon the discoveries produced by the endeavors of past and current researchers. I firmly believe that science is much more that a body of facts and ideas; it is a process by which new ideas are discovered in the context of previous information. Vocabulary and facts are necessary to serve as the language that is used to communicate ideas efficiently and to provide a foundation for new ideas.
