About Matt

I am a Los Angeles-based artist whose studio is in Boyle Heights. He has taught at New York’s School of Visual Arts, Pratt Institute, NYU/Tisch School of the Arts and at NYU/TischAsia in Singapore.

I have participated in seven international and domestic artist residencies and received multiple grants and fellowships since 2008. My paintings and videos are in private collections in the USA and Australia, where Sheridan is represented by TW Fine Art in Brisbane.

Before becoming an independent artist, Sheridan worked in television animation on such shows as Beavis + Butthead, Blue's Clues, Daria and Celebrity Deathmatch. His independently produced animation shorts have been broadcast and screened internationally. Sheridan's students have gone on to become successful artists working at Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, Dreamworks, Marvel and many other production companies.

I have my BFA in Film and Television from NYU and my MFA in Fine Art from Art Center College of Design. I studied figured drawing and painting at the Art Students League of New York. I've used Abobe software for 20 years and can teach you Flash, Photoshop, Premiere, and InDesign. Most importantly, I know how to cross reference art history with cinematic history and philosophy to discuss your ideas in depth to help you improve upon them.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Adobe Photoshop

I've used Photoshop for over 20 years in broadcast television, print and art production. I've also taught Photoshop as part of course curricula at several university programs in NYC, LA and Singapore.

Art History

I'm a working contemporary artist who has visited nearly every art museum on earth, including the Hermitage in Russia. I have an MFA in fine art and know about the history of abstraction, Old Master figure painting and Renaissance masters from da Vinci on through the Baroque. It's my experience it's most useful to learn art history from an artist, so give me a shot! My library is ready to rock.

Drawing

I have taught figure drawing in my animation classes at SVA. Those classes dealt with not only drawing directly from the figure in a literal fashion but also drawing in styles created by modern and contemporary artists. I also created a course at NYU called Drawing and Design for Animation in which I taught perspective and color theory. If you need portfolio samples I'm happy to send them to you.

Painting

I created a course at NYU called Drawing and Design for Animation in which I taught perspective and color theory, both of which are important to figurative painting and which make abstract paintings stronger. I studied figurative painting at the Art Students League of New York. I have my MFA in Art Center in Fine Art with a concentration in Painting and Video, both abstract. I paint every day and know the history of painting well. My paintings are owned by a collector who also owns a Picasso in his collection. If you need portfolio samples I'm happy to send them to you.

Video Production

I own HD video and DSLR cameras, both of which I use to document my video installations. I work with video everyday, with photographic and animated video. I worked in television production for years and now make my own videos for projection and monitors. I have taught video production software since 1998 and have won grants and fellowships based on my video productions. My animated videos have played around the world in festivals and television. If you need portfolio samples I'm happy to send them to you.
