About Carolina

Hello, my name is Carolina. I was born in Bogotá, Colombia and I lived there with my parents and two younger siblings until my 20th birthday. I had the amazing fortune of attending the German School of Bogotá for 14 years where I developed a passion for world languages and cultures. I am very proud to call myself multilingual ( Spanish, German, English). I am highly proficient in the three languages (speaking, reading, writing). I got married and moved to the City of Angels (Los Angeles, California) where I have lived for the last 20 years. I attended the University of California, Los Angeles where I graduated with honors with a degree in Spanish (Literature and Linguistics). After receiving my Bachelors I started the credential program in order to become a licensed teacher in California. I have been a high school Spanish teacher for the last 10 years. I have taught from level 1-4 for non Spanish Speaking students, and I am the only one who teaches the advanced classes for bilingual students ( heritage Spanish Speakers). This is my favorite assignment!

In my spare time I love reading books in English (to polish and enhance my vocabulary), write poetry, draw, play the guitar and watch foreign films (because I enjoy the sound of languages). I also love to travel with my students. I have taken more than 100 students to Europe, where they have had the opportunity to practice their language and people skills,as well.

I did my undergrad studies at the University of California, Los Angeles and got my Bachelors Degree in Spanish (Literature and Linguistics). I graduated with honors and served as president of the Spanish Honors Society. I possess a secondary teaching credential issued by the state of California that allows me to teach Spanish from Kindergarten- 12th grade. I am also licensed in bilingual education.
I have been a Spanish teacher at John Burroughs High School in Burbank, CA where I have taught from level 1-4 and the advanced classes for Spanish Heritage Speakers (Literacy based curriculum). For the last 9 years I have taught an intensive 6 week course for students who want to fulfill the 3 year language requisite to enter UCLA. During these years I have taught around 2,000 students, many of them have belonged to the chapter of the Spanish Honors Society that not only recognizes the best students, but also gives them access to college scholarships and travel abroad opportunities.

My teaching philosophy is based on communication and personalized curriculum. The starting point is the students' interests, talents, needs and goals. Some students like to understand how the language works through grammatical structures, spelling rules, or phonetics. Others are interested in specific themes and only want to focus on acquiring the necessary vocabulary and fluency in these topics. Some would like to develop speaking competency to move in informal settings, and others want to know more about the culture and may benefit more learning through popular music, recipes, sports or the famous Latin American soap operas. There are other students who would like a last review before a big exam... I am trained to offer effective learning activities to fit the needs of any student in a productive and fun way.

Ultimately the greatest goal is that my students have the opportunity to develop the 4 language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. I also emphasize the diversity of the Spanish speaking world with its fascinating cultures, products, and beliefs.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
