In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am a professional bassist and teacher of all strings. I have taught cello privately as well as coached youth symphony sectionals and low string programs in Fairfax County Public School Music Programs and also in Contra Costa County School Programs.
I have taught ear training at Memphis State University. My BM is from Cleveland Institute of Music. I approach ear training several ways. From music we hear everyday and chord quality to interval measuring and distance.
I have taught a course I designed, called Music is Everywhere, for Fairfax County Public School Intersession programs. I started a string program at the Annandale Va Montessori School. I use Dalcroze Eurhythmics and movement to music in my classes and music appreciation. I focus on how we listen, learn and interpret music.
I have taught music history while I was a full graduate assistant. As a musician I perform and understand notation of all styles of music from Renaissance to modern and jazz/theater and rock. I teach all these styles and cover historical performance styles. I brought the Brazilian early music concert/ Opera Project to Humboldt State University while I was their bass teacher during 2012-2014.
I have worked as a studio musician on PBS projects, recording studio projects with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and recorded CDs for premieres and events like the 100th anniversary of the Washington National Cathedral.
I have played piano and read music since I was 7 years old. I passed out of my piano comps at the Cleveland Institute of Music as a String Bass Performance major. I took lessons at CIM while I was studying bass. I have taught in music stores, home teaching companies and at my own studio for more than 20 years.
I taught sight singing as Memphis State University as part of my full graduate assistantship.
I work with the student to learn how to sing a pitch in tune that is being played and also pitch memory ....then we advance to first hear whole steps and 1/2 steps, identify perfect intervals, and learn how to measure atonal intervals from that point. Ex ...hear P4 go up 1/2 step = tritone....or P5 go down 1/2 step=tritone.
I have taught violin privately and for music stories and in home lesson companies. I also teach viola, cello and bass. I directed a Montessori string program I started and taught all the instruments and ensemble playing.
