About Julie

Although I am relatively new to WyzAnt, I have an active, clear teaching credential in English from the state of California and am excited to apply my experience and skills as a tutor in the Los Angeles area!

For sixteen years, I have worked in the field of education. For six of those years, I specifically taught a full-time as a middle and high school education English teacher. Additionally, I have worked as a leader of curricular and diversity development in education. And most recently, I held the position of Principal of a special needs middle and high school.

The majority of my education and job experiences are related to teaching, curricular development, multiculturalism, and leadership. While living in England and studying Shakespeare, I was hired as the academic advisor by Cromwell Productions, Inc., an ‘edutainment’ film company, to write scripts and help create multi-educational CDROMs intended for undergraduate student study.

I then returned to California and began to teach. I worked as a Language Arts teacher for four years at La Canada High School. And due to my success with ELL students and CLAD certification, I was offered to head and continue to develop the ELL program for La Cañada Middle School students.

I moved to the east coast for eight years. My successes in the Maryland school system reveal my efforts to promote a school with a rich curriculum by way of meaningful lessons, relevant assessment, and effective strategy for learning. While instructing in Frederick county, Maryland, I created lessons intended to enhance writing for reading comprehension in students. Its success spread throughout the school; the lessons became mental models to aid in improving student academic achievement. I was also an English Language Arts Mentor Instructor, facilitating staff with support and advice to enhance and improve their instruction. Further, I was nominated by the staff and ran as a PLC and SIT leader for Frederick County Public Schools the last year I taught there.

I then worked as the Assistant Director at ASC English in Boston, Massachusetts, whose "mission is to provide high-quality, affordable English language and academic study skill programs in a welcoming, culturally-nurturing environment in order to help students achieve their goals of successfully attaining an American university degree or enriching their experience in the United States." As a leader at this adult school, I was able to work more closely with adult English Language Learners, developing curriculum, evaluating and monitoring Language Instructors, as well as developing and managing a separate K thru 12 curriculum in English and Math that was approved as No Child Left Behind certified.

Developing the Multicultural Department at St. John’s Prep was an enriching and fulfilling experience. I was able to combine my work teaching adults with my classroom experiences and background in diversity to meet the needs at the Prep. Further, I was able to enhance the experiences for the minority students (predominantly Spanish speaking) on campus and cultural diversity at large in this small, New England town. Valuable time was spent mentoring teachers at the Prep (running workshops and meetings) in how to successfully reach the broadening minority groups at St. John’s working as a liaison between students, the teaching staff, and administration to create more effective educational practices. Further, I worked closely with college-bound students of color (for the most part the first in their families to ultimately attend college) to support, mentor, and tutor these students academically and socially.

And in the past year, I have had the pleasure of working at Stem3 Academy as their Principal. The work has been rewarding and enriching as a leader in education. Stem3 Academy has given me the opportunity to work exclusively with students in special education, providing an excellent platform for the education of students on the spectrum.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I was a high school English teacher for six years in the public schools system. I have taught various grades of English, been a mentor teacher, and have acquired various awards and recognition for my teaching skills.

ESL/ESOL

I was asked by a High School to head the ESL program at a district level. I was the Assistant Director for adult students working to pass the TOEFL exam.

Literature

Not only are my Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in English Literature, but I also have a Teaching Credential in English. Furthermore, I am an avid reader and love to share my love and understanding of English literature with others.

Proofreading

I was the Academic Editor at Cromwell Productions in England, reviewing very sophisticated essays and research analysis for published works related to authors including John Milton and William Shakespeare.

Reading

Reading and writing are my specialties. While teaching in Maryland, I was elected by the teaching staff to represent, promote, and advance reading and writing in the public school systems.

Spanish

I have completed all four levels of Spanish in High School, as well as passing the AP Spanish exam with a 4. I also took all levels of Spanish at UCLA and was only 10 units away from receiving a minor in Spanish.

Vocabulary

I am a lifelong learner and, as such, I continually expose myself to new vocabulary, read extensively, and am never afraid to ask if I do not know what a word means.

Writing

I created a lesson plan all Maryland teachers utilized in their classrooms to advance both reading and writing skills. My approach to writing includes a review of expository versus narrative writing.
