Azusa Pacific University, CA (Chemistry)
Spring 2008 (Other)
I earned a bachelor's degree in Chemistry at Azusa Pacific University in May of 08. I am currently a math and science teacher at a private school. I plan on attending graduate school to obtain a PhD in Geochemistry where I want to pursue a profession as a college professor in chemistry, as well as conduct research (when my boys get a little older).
My tutoring journey began in college when I would help my classmates in study rooms to understand chemistry better. When people started noticing my chemistry abilities they would ask for my help exclusively. This gave me the confidence to teach as a TA at the university I attend. For two years I taught eight students in the first year of chemistry. This job helped to solidify my ultimate goal in becoming a professor. I also worked for a private tutoring company in Glendora where I helped all grade levels in all levels of math and science.
It really feels good to know I make a difference in peoples lives. I am an outgoing and caring person and my students appreciate those qualities because not only is it hard to ask for help, it's hard to pick up shattered confidence. I have learned that each student desires the opportunity to succeed and it is important for me to facilitate this goal by adapting my teaching styles to their unique learning abilities. My love of learning helped me to realize the work and reinforcements necessary in being successful when there is a lot of pressure and additional factors at hand.
I am two biology classes away from minoring in the subject I just took the classes for my own interests including many geology classes, as well as, oceanography, marine biology, and scuba diving. I am also a dive master and I occasionally help my fathers business in Hawaii which is a scuba diving business, where I take people out on guided dive tours. I have a minor in bible studies from APU and I adore world views and studying the universe and our place in it as a theologian. I also help with GRE, SAT and other standardized test preparation. Where I make outlines summarizing the material and give them to my students as handouts where we fill in the outline together. I create a lesson plan based on the timeline my students provide. Nilsa has been wonderful to work with. There was some anxiety when we arrived, but that quickly changed to hopefulness. Nilsa related well on a personal level while being able to restore confidence and began to make headway towards learning goals. Incredibly lucky to connect with such a positive, competent instructor. Confident this will make all the difference.
I have taken chemistry twice and failed them twice. For my last attempt at taking chemistry I hired Nilsa to help me pass this class. I passed the class!!! thanks to Nilsa's help! She's the best, most nicest, most patient and awesome tutor I've ever had! Thank you Nilsa for helping me pass this class!
Nilsa is an amazing tutor. We have 2 high school boys and she has helped us with Chemistry and Algebra II. She was so helpful, and super accommodating in scheduling. She made all the difference.
Nilsa has made a tough subject for our son much more pleasant. She communicates clearly and finds ways to break through. Nilsa goes above and beyond to make sure that our son is successful in his subjects and making time for him. I can't say enough good things about her.
I just wish she were my student's TEACHER! She's fantastic and is certainly teaching my son chemistry outside the classroom. She is making up for what is lacking INSIDE his classroom. Don't know what we'd do without her.
Nilsa was terrific for high level chemistry teaching! She was both patient and thorough.
I am positive her assistance will give the boost to my son to attain the solid A he wants to achieve.
There aren't enough good things I can say about Nilsa. Not only is she an amazing teacher, she is also caring and kind. She created packets for every chapter of my organic chemistry book so that I can better understand what i was learning; I will be asking for her assistance this next semester when I start ochem part 2. She always wants to put the student ahead of the game by starting the material early so when the student goes to class, he/she is prepared to understand the lecture. I admit I am a little bit difficult to teach because I ask so many questions, but she is very intelligent and finds the answer either by putting the pieces together and explaining the concepts or she goes back to her own resources (textbooks) and finds the answer. Overall, I highly recommend her to anyone looking for success in any of the subjects she teaches.
Nilsa tutored me in college chemistry and she surpassed all my expectations. I have had many experiences with tutors, but this one was by far the best and most professional. She was able to adjust her teaching style to my learning style and made sure to use techniques which helped me most. She went out of her way to help me, whether it be by creating outlines with me or meeting at a time which best suits me. Without her knowledge and passion for the subject I would never have understood concepts as well as I do now. I will definitely be continuing my studies with Nilsa!
My son was pleased with this tutoring session and found it to be most helpful preparing for his upcoming exam.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a bachelor's degree in chemistry. I taught chemistry as a TA in college for two years. I taught chemistry for 3 years in the classroom which includes honors chemistry. I have prepared many students in AP chemistry and college chemistry exam and classes.
I use three different organic chemistry texts books as reference and I have outlined (Wade) each chapter that I offer to students as a guide to work through. I also have a organic and inorganic molecular model building set that is very helpful for students aiding them in visualizing stereo chemistry. Organic chemistry is both memorization and theory so I take both approaches to insure each student does well.
