About MaryAlison

Hello! I am excited about the opportunity to help you become more successful.

Individual tutoring is an excellent way to get one-on-one instructional time that is catered to your educational needs and goals. I think tutoring can boost both grades and confidence; students who believe in themselves then begin to master the material bit by bit once they have the mindset that they can do it! I think encouraging students is vital to success. As your tutor, I can supplement your school's curriculum or work with you to create your own curriculum to help you reach your goals. I can provide practice materials for review or I can provide enrichment lessons. I can also provide homework help, study advice, and test-taking tips. We can work together to create the best tutoring experience for you.

I have a master's degree in education and also have elementary, Spanish, and bilingual California teaching credentials. I am a local elementary school teacher by day and am usually available for tutoring in the late afternoons and evenings during the week, as well as on the weekends. During the summer, I have more flexibility for tutoring.

I have experience teaching and tutoring in both the United States and Spain and I have worked with students of all ages, from preschoolers to adults. I have been a tutor, student teacher, teaching assistant, and teacher in various settings in both countries, and I have experience teaching a wide range of subjects. I am available to tutor in many subjects, particularly English and the Humanities; I am most frequently hired to tutor in Reading, Spanish, Elementary Math, and general Elementary subjects.

If you have any questions or would like more information, please send me an email. I look forward to hearing from you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

Students with ADD or ADHD often struggle in the classroom to focus, stay on task, and complete assignments.

I work with these students to provide accommodations for them. These are different based on each student's individual needs. Tutoring for a student with ADD/ADHD depends on the student and can focus on study skills or strategies for the regular classroom in addition to help with regular assignments and topics of study.

Aspergers

I have personal experience with family members with Aspergers as well as experience with students with Aspergers in the classroom.

Students with Aspergers are often very bright, but struggle with social norms and may need special accommodations in the classroom that are also useful in tutoring. This may include repetition and repeated directions, on-task reminders, and the set-up of a special work space. I find that patience is also very important, because students with Aspergers are often very literal and ask lots of directed questions and want explicit explanations.

Every student is different, and I can work with you to develop a tutoring plan that best fits your needs.

Autism

I have experience working with students with mild autism in a mainstreamed classroom. Autistic students are often very bright, though they may be voracious learners in one subject and struggle more in another because they do not see the value in that type of knowledge. Working with you, we can develop a tutoring plan that best fits your needs, taking into account the strengths and weaknesses of your autistic student and the skill areas they need to focus upon during tutoring lessons.

CBEST

CBEST stands for California Basic Educational Skills Test. You need to pass this to become a teacher in California, and most districts also require this test for substitute teachers. It covers basic math, reading, and writing. I can help you with specific concepts that are covered on the CBEST exam as well as test-taking strategies, time management tips, and day-before advice to prepare yourself for a relaxed testing environment.

College Counseling

The college application process can be intimidating if you're unsure of where to start and do not have the necessary guidance. Not sure what a safety school, a match school, and a reach school are? I can work with you to identify the right type of school for you, from academic qualifications to size, location, finances, and more.

I can help you navigate the process from the basic college search, as you decide what schools make the most sense for you, to the actual application, assisting you with confusing application questions and college essay topics and revisions.

Common Core

I am well versed in the Common Core State Standards as a California classroom teacher. I have attended many trainings and workshops regarding the changes in these new standards in order to focus on the standard shifts as I plan instruction and utilize new Common Core curriculum.

Dyslexia

Students with dyslexia struggle with reading because they do not process the written word like most of us do. Depending on your needs and the areas of reading in which you or your child struggles, I can help with phonemic awareness, phonics, reading comprehension, spelling, and vocabulary.

Elementary (K-6th)

Building a solid educational foundation during the elementary years is incredibly important, and I am passionate about helping students understand new concepts.

I am a credentialed California public school teacher, including my multiple subjects credential used by elementary teachers, and I am currently teaching 4th grade. I have experience teaching all elementary subjects, including math, language arts (including phonics, reading, writing, spelling, and vocabulary), science, social studies, P.E., art, and ELD (English Language Development). I have been a tutor, student teacher, teacher, and substitute teacher for K-6 students.

Elementary Math

Building a solid educational foundation during the elementary years is incredibly important, and I am passionate about helping students understand new concepts.

I am a credentialed California elementary school teacher currently teaching 4th grade and have experience working with elementary students on math subjects in grades K-6. I have been a tutor, student teacher, teacher, and substitute teacher for K-6 students.

Elementary Science

I am credentialed CA elementary school teacher currently teaching 4th grade, and I have experience as a teacher, student teacher, teaching assistant, and substitute teacher. I think science can be a very fun subject for young students and work to explain it in simple, relevant terminology.

English

I have a California teaching credential to teach all subjects at the elementary level, including English Language Arts. I have taught English Language Arts, English Language Arts Intervention, English Language Development, and Reading Intervention in California public schools.

I have also been an English tutor for students in Spain (teaching everything from basic vocabulary to grammar to high school exit exam preparation) and have taught intensive ESL classes to teenage to young adult international students.

I love reading and writing, and want to help you love them too!

ESL/ESOL

I have worked for a local language academy as an ESL instructor, teaching an intensive ESL course to teenage to young adult students from several countries, including Russia, Turkey, China, Korea, Japan, and Mexico. I also spent a year teaching English in Spain, both as a private tutor and as a teacher in a public bilingual school.

Handwriting

I am a California classroom teacher. Handwriting is a valuable skill that students still need to master, despite the prevalence of technology. Practicing the strokes for manuscript or cursive is important to teach muscle memory so that students write legibly. For some students, they may need assistance forming the correct pencil grip to begin proper printing.

Phonics

I am a CA public school teacher and I have a CA teaching credential to teach at the elementary level. I have taken graduate courses on reading skills and phonics for primary students and beginning English learners. I have also tutored, student taught, and taught reading and phonics at the primary level.

Public Speaking

As a classroom teacher, I am accustomed to speaking in front of a large group and "thinking on my feet." I have also judged high school debate competitions. Public speaking is a skill that you must practice, but there are many ways to overcome your nervousness. Practice makes perfect! Your subject must grab the attention of your audience from the very beginning, and you must continue to engage your listeners throughout your presentation. Eye contact and body language are also important features of a solid presentation.

Reading

I have a CA Multiple Subjects teaching credential for teaching elementary grades and subjects, including reading, and have experience working with students primarily in grades K-6. I also studied reading and literacy in my master's degree program. I am a classroom teacher and have previously taught reading intervention classes.

Social Studies

I have a CA teaching credential to teach at the elementary level and can help your child understand basic Social Studies topics covered in grades K-6, including American history, California history, and ancient civilizations. I find history fascinating, and I hope you will soon be able to as well!

Spanish

I have a California teaching credential for single subject Spanish as well as a bilingual teaching credential in Spanish. I have two years of experience as a Spanish teacher for elementary grades through Spanish 1. I have experience teaching and/or tutoring Spanish 1, 2, & 3 as well as elementary, topic-based Spanish (such as numbers, colors, food, time, etc.) and primary level bilingual/Spanish immersion reading and writing. I was a foreign languages major in college and studied abroad in both Spain and Costa Rica, and also lived and worked in Spain for a year post-graduation.

Special Needs

I can work with special needs students to support their learning goals. These are different based on each student's individual needs (including, but not limited to, dyslexia, Asperger's, ADD/ADHD, visual or auditory processing disorders, specific learning disabilities, etc.). Tutoring for a student with special needs depends on the student and can focus on study skills or strategies for the regular classroom or for homework in addition to additional instruction, explanation, repetition, repeated directions, and practice with regard to regular assignments and topics of study.

Study Skills

I am a CA public school teacher and have a CA teaching credential to teach at the elementary level. I have worked with students as a tutor and as a teacher to improve their study habits at home so they can be more successful in the classroom. Study skills include time management tips, test preparation advice, and lessons on transferring classroom learning to the test, whether it involves notes, highlighters, flashcards, or another strategy.

Writing

Writing skills are incredibly important for young students as well as adults in the workforce. The writing process of brainstorming, drafting, editing, revising, and rewriting can be challenging and is something I work on regularly with my students. In addition, grammar and spelling are important aspects of writing and are skills that I can go over with students to improve the quality of their writing.

I am a credentialed teacher. I have many years of experience with strong writing skills, including an undergraduate thesis, a graduate thesis, and grant proposals for classroom materials.
