About Chris

My wife and I moved to San Diego from Minneapolis to be close to family here. Although I am new to tutoring, my career in research and manufacturing has given me experience in training others and teaching them new skills. While working at the University of Minnesota as senior laboratory technician, I trained people in analytical lab procedures. Also, as a process engineer for over 10 years, I taught new employees the principles and procedures needed in manufacturing. Since 2011, I have had the opportunity to learn new skills in several contract manufacturing roles, but this has not kept me as busy as I would like. I am looking forward to tutoring, which will help utilize my free time. I have patience and understanding, and look forward to helping others learn new skills on the path to reaching their goals.

With Bachelors of Science Degrees in Biology and Chemical Engineering from the University of Minnesota, I am comfortable with Math, Science and Technology, as well as other subjects. My tutoring method is to answer questions, solve problems, and work together with you in areas that you feel you could use more confidence and strength.

My Calculus and math knowledge is a result of my college coursework and work experience.

I have chemistry experience from my Chemical Engineering degree and industrial manufacturing experience.

My English experience comes primarily from my college coursework and interest in language.

I have experience with having taken the MCAT and applying for medical school.

I have used Microsoft Excel and other software in college and on the job.

Please contact me if you have any questions or would like more information. I would look forward hearing from you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Biology

With a Bachelor of Science in biology from the University of Minnesota, I have been employed in biochemical research laboratories for over 7 years. This has given me a well-rounded background in the academic, as well as the real-world side of biology. I would work with you to increase your confidence in the areas you most need it, and also to achieve any other personal learning goals you may have.

Elementary Math

I am approved in Elementary Math and have a solid background in math from my college and work experience. I like to determine what areas my students need the most help in, and then work with them on improving those skills. I enjoy working with kids. It is rewarding to watch their progress while helping them learn.

English

I have taken a numerous college level courses in English, Writing and Literature while attaining my two bachelor's degrees. Now I would like to help others advance their English skills.

ESL/ESOL

As a native English speaker, I've always had an interest in languages and the similarities and differences between them. I've taken German and Spanish in school, so I know the difficulty of trying to learn another language. In fact, when I tutor ESL, I like to learn my student's native language, because I feel this makes me a more effective tutor. My approach is to assess my student's English language needs, then work on those areas to achieve the desired results using language exercises tailored to my student's particular needs.

Macintosh

I am very comfortable with Macintosh computers having owned one model or another since 1990. Using them for college and around the home, and with friends that are also Mac users, I have developed a very good understanding of the Mac operating system, including how to resolve computer, printer, and internet issues and would like to share that knowledge with others to increase their comfort level.

Microsoft Access

I have taken Microsoft Access 1 and 2 at Hennepin Technical College and also have some experience with Libre Office Base. I am familiar with database design, data entry, importing data, creating reports and forms, queries, calculated fields, exporting data, and database maintenance. I would look forward to helping you learn to utilize the power of Microsoft Access.

Microsoft Excel

I have over 10 years of experience using Microsoft Excel, on both PC and Macintosh computers. I am familiar with data entry, formulas, functions, cell formatting, logical operators, worksheets, charts, and more. With a patient and understanding tutoring style, I would look forward to helping you reach your Excel goals.

Microsoft Windows

My knowledge and understanding of Microsoft Windows has been gained through using the Windows operating system on the job, in college, and at home.

Most of my experience is with Windows XP and Windows 7, and includes using software packages, especially Microsoft Office. My skills also include: navigating in the Windows environment; operations with Windows, files and folders; file management; optimizing system settings; and basic troubleshooting techniques. I am also familiar with system updates, software package installations and printing operations.

My patient and understanding tutoring style is helpful for those looking to increase their confidence with Windows, and achieve their learning objectives.

Prealgebra

Having taken college level math courses has given me a very good understanding of prealgebra concepts such as integers, exponents, rules of operations, estimation, linear equations, simple probability, and more. Equally important, I enjoy prealgebra and am able to clearly explain its concepts to others.

Reading

As an avid reader, I am familiar with all aspects of reading skills. These areas include: reading comprehension, phonics, reading fluency, and vocabulary. I am also knowledgeable in the process of learning to read and building reading skills.

Social Studies

During the liberal education portion of my college education, I took courses such as Interpersonal Communication, General Psychology, Science and Civilization, Indian-White Relations, and others, which gave me a solid foundation in social studies. My interest in social studies continues to this day as my wife and I regularly discuss and analyze current social events, like the political campaign, terrorism, as well as past events such as the Vietnam War and slavery. I continue to keep on top of events by reading, and also by watching programs such as: Face the Nation, Meet the Press, local and national news, 60 Minutes, and documentaries.

Spelling

My experience as an English tutor has given me skill with spelling. Tutoring in reading also has strengthened my spelling. In addition, attaining my bachelors of science degrees required skill in spelling. Finally, I have experience working in an medical manufacturing facility where good documentation practices require correct spelling.
