I started out my career as a reading tutor at an elementary school. After receiving my B.A. in English and my teaching credential from Cal Poly, I taught English to grades 6th through 12th. During my years of teaching, I was often amazed and pleased to see how just a small amount of one-on-one tutoring can create a sense of ownership of the skills we practiced together.
Many students find essay composition and CAHSEE preparation to be stressful and frustrating. As strange as it may sound, looking back, those are the subjects I found to be the most fun and rewarding to tutor. There are so many skill sets that I have found over the years that make those subjects manageable and dare I say-- sometimes even enjoyable. Once students have the keys to essay writing, they often feel a sense of power and freedom in other subjects as well.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
