About Karen

I have taught over 850 students at the University of Southern California, Indiana University, and Arcadia University for 16 years. Some of my classes include from “Love and Laughs - An Exploration of Hollywood Romantic Comedies,” “Making the Visual Literal - An Examination of Film Adaptation,” “Popular Culture and Celebrity,” and “Film and Television Genres.” These courses are intensive in their writing requirements so students learn how to construct cogent essays using theories we have examined in class. Teaching students basic elements of writing such as identifying arguments, developing a thesis, transitions, and counter-arguments as well as demonstrating close reading approaches provides a solid foundation for students with writing challenges. I have helped numerous students improve their writing skills in my classes and when they need more assistance, I tutor them individually.

My experiences as a writer, I have written several book chapters, articles, and essays, benefits students because I know the obstacles they face as they compose written assignments. I have also worked as an editor and the skills I have gained there enable me to show students common essays errors. Moreover, my work as a media studies scholar, I received my undergraduate degree from Princeton University, an MS from the Communication Department at Cornell University and a PhD in Critical Studies from the University of Southern California, School of Cinema-Television, has made me very knowledgeable concerning the social, political, and cultural aspects of American history and social studies.

I am generally available from 9 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday. My schedule is flexible so please contact me if those times are not convenient for you.

I look forward to hearing from you and assisting you in your intellectual development.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
