About Sharon

I often tell people that teaching high school English for 11 years -- working closely with students on their writing, their reading, their grammar -- was the most satisfying job I ever had. Maybe that's why, after 30+ years as a professional writer, I've decided to offer my expertise as a writing, reading and grammar tutor and as a proof reader.

I earned my lifetime California Secondary Teaching Credential at UC Berkeley. After 11 years as a junior high and high school teacher in Los Angeles, I had the courage to became a professional writer. I've had lots of journalism experience since then (i.e. Los Angeles Times, Smithsonian Magazine.) I am the author of "Let Us Eat Cake: Adventures in Food and Friendship," a memoir-cookbook published by Harper Collins. With my husband, I co-wrote TV and movie screenplays. Even after I left teaching, I continued working with students on their college-application essays. (I started with my own two kids, both of whom got into Princeton, and spread to their friends and family friends!)

My many years of experience as a teacher and a professional writer have helped me fine tune my skills and expertise in helping students with their writing, reading and grammar -- and doing proofreading for others.
I am offering my services as a tutor because I enjoy teaching and I love helping students improve their skills and their confidence. I am happy to work with those in high school and college, and adults who would like help improving a magazine article, novel, non-fiction book, or screenplay.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I have a lifetime California Secondary Teaching credential and taught Jr. High and High School English and literature for 11 years. I am a prolific reader myself, and for more than 30 years have been an active member of a book club in which we read and have serious discussions about classics and modern fiction. I have taught grammar and style not only to students, but also to young colleagues at a PR firm where I was an Account Director, and to colleagues at a guidebook company where I was the Managing Editor.

Grammar

As a jr. and high school English teacher for 11 years, I taught grammar using exercises based on textbooks and also on my favorite grammar book "The Elements of Style," which was co-authored by EB White, author of "Charlotte's Web." I also tutored colleagues in grammar when I was the Managing Editor at a guidebook company and when I was an Account Director at a PR firm.

Proofreading

I have a lifetime California Secondary Teaching credential and taught Jr. High and High School English and literature for 11 years. I have had considerable first-hand experience as a proof reader: I was the Managing Editor for five years on a dozen or more city guidebooks; I was the author of the memoir/cookbook "Let Us Eat Cake" published by Harper Collins; I have written articles for publications including the Los Angeles Times, Bon Appetit, MORE Magazine and Smithsonian Magazine.

I am a prolific reader myself, and for more than 30 years have been an active member of a book club in which we read and have serious discussions about classics and modern fiction. I co-authored a novel and scores of screenplays with my husband, Paul, and have an excellent understanding of dramatic structure and story.

Writing

I am a professional writer who also taught jr. and senior high school for 11 years and assisted students on their college application essays. (Four of them were accepted at Princeton, and two at Harvard!) I was the Managing Editor for a publisher of city guidebooks, overseeing the writing by dozens of contributors. I am the author of "Let Us Eat Cake: Adventures in Food & Friendship," published by Harper Collins. I co-wrote scores of TV shows and motion pictures with my husband, Paul Boorstin. I have written more than 100 articles about lifestyle, travel, food and personalities for publications including the Los Angeles Times, Smithsonian, MORE, Town & Country Travel, Family Circle and Travel + Leisure.
