About Bethany

It's tough to be a student these days. Most just need the right focused attention to unlock their academic potential. That's what I do! My job is to minimize your writing, studying, and test-testing anxieties by freeing you up to actually ENJOY what you're doing. (Yes, this is possible - no matter what the subject, or your perceived aptitude for it. After all, learning is a creative act...)

My approach to tutoring is interpersonal, structured, engaging and effective. I've worked with all ages in multiple subjects, but I specialize in supporting college and high school students to find a writing process that works for them, and I'm proud to say I've helped dozens of students craft their best papers. As a certified Academic Manager, I am also trained to provide high-level organizational support with time management and study skills.

A little about me, if you're curious: I was homeschooled until 8th grade, completed high school at age 16 and graduated magna cum laude from the University of Colorado with a BA in Psychology (concentration in Chemistry/Neuroscience). I have proven strengths in English, science and math, including 1,100+ hours advanced training in biology, anatomy and physiology.

Although I have met my pre-med requirements and was hired as an associate professor by CU's Psychology Department while still an undergrad, I chose to hold off on medical school and instead pursue my ambitions of being a professional writer, a goal I have accomplished since moving to Los Angeles.

Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to working with you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Anatomy

In addition to graduating with honors as a pre-med student, I trained extensively at the American Institute of Massage Therapy and was named valedictorian with over 1300 hours in anatomy, physiology, kinesiology and practicum. I find this subject a blast to teach. In fact, one of my favorite students just finished out her A&P class with flying colors and I'm super proud of her! (It was the first time she'd ever gotten an A in science.)

Elementary (K-6th)

I've trained extensively as a reading, math, and science tutor at this level. I did outreach through Colorado University at Bates Elementary School, where I helped implement a tutoring program that improved test scores over the course of several semesters. Since then I have continued to work with K-6 students one-on-one basis. It's extraordinary to be part of foundational growth and setting up a child for a lifetime of loving learning!

English

I had a very strong whole language education and began my college career as an English major. Now as a professional writer and tutor, I am able to provide exceptional English support to my students, including helping their papers go from good to great. And because I have experience working with elementary all the way up through college, I build skills for long-term success in grammar, spelling, vocab, editing, structure and format. This is my favorite work to do.

Proofreading

If what you need isn't so much a one-on-one sit down for essay outlining, I proofread drafts remotely for students and would be happy to help you ace your next essay. I have written and edited professionally for many years and am 100% up to speed on MLA, APA and Chicago style formatting. My technical proofing is detailed and efficient, and I will also make suggestions on how to optimize word choice and sentence structure to strengthen your paper's presentation and flow.

Psychology

I hold a BA in Psychology with an emphasis in Chemistry/Neuroscience from CU, and my track record was so great there that I was hired by the university to co-teach an undergraduate psych course while I was still an undergrad. I'm well-studied in abnormal, cognitive and positive psychology, statistics, clinical approaches, research and academic writing.

Special Needs

I was trained by the University of Colorado Department of Education to administer a reading program to special needs 3rd graders in the community. This entailed a detailed certification course, equipping me to tutor in a group setting at Bates Elementary School. I also did reading tutoring one-on-one with students at the University in an after-school program. Since then, I have worked with a number of students with special considerations, including dyslexia and brain injury.

Study Skills

I'm certified through UCLA in Academic Management, which is a high-level relational approach to learning that builds on a student's strengths. This includes hands-on assistance with organization, time management, advocacy, as well as establishing study and work habits that lead to a more positive overall educational experience. My goal is to help my students discover his/her best (and most fun) way to engage with the material presented within the time allotted for the assignment, improving grades and confidence while avoiding unnecessary stress.

Writing

I am a professional writer and editor in addition to being one of the top local tutors in the field of academic writing; as such, I've helped dozens of undergrads, high school students, Master's candidates, and even a handful of businesspeople transform their skills and confidence with the written word. My approach is structured, creative, and highly effective at taking the stress and mystery out of the writing process. Whether it's designing an argument, grammar, formatting, research and citations, or just getting started, let me be the one to support you in taking your papers from good to great.
