About Dr. Kari

Even though I have a PhD with distinction in educational psychology and mathematical statistics, my students consistently tell me that what they notice the most about me is that: 1) they love working with me and look forward to our sessions, 2) they really learn – sometimes for the first time, and 3) they look at learning and their life in a more positive way because of our work together. I feel grateful that I am able to help people improve their lives!

I specialize in helping students who do not learn in traditional ways. I have been trained in what’s called “differentiated instruction” which is a set of techniques to match my teaching style to a student’s learning style. Differentiated instruction makes it possible for students who haven’t been successful with typical teaching approaches to finally be successful.

My passion in school was always math! I love it and my passion for it combined with differentiated instruction techniques allows my students to begin to enjoy it and to make much better grades. Because of my training, I’m also great at teaching the essay writing process, and I’m an expert in helping students improve their reading recognition (phonics) and reading comprehension skills.

I have considerable experience as an educational therapist, teacher and tutor and can promise you an extraordinary level of personal responsibility in my commitment to your learning. My business is built by word of mouth and I deliver my personal best at all times.

I’m glad to consult with parents to help them support learning at home. I provide feedback to parents after each lesson.

I maintain an office in Beverly Hills and I also meet with students via the internet using tools such as Skype. I’ll respond to you very quickly and usually can meet with you the same day you contact me or the following day.

My training is: PhD in Educational Psychology and Mathematical Statistics, MEd in Learning Disabilities, Educational Diagnosis and Reading Remediation, and BS in Early Childhood Education.

I’ll do everything I can to be sure you learn, enjoy our time together, and make better grades!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

Not everyone learns the same way, and I have been trained in the art of figuring out the best way to teach a student so he or she really understands. I have found ways to help students by using strategies such as stories, memory tricks, and drawings that make math easier to learn. I can teach students ways to work with their natural strengths to improve their test scores.

ADHD

Individuals with ADD/ADHD are particularly prone to difficulties in executive skills such as planning, prioritizing, organization, time management and regulation of attention and emotions. I have been trained through college courses and workshops and training programs to teach tools and strategies for success to individuals affected by ADD/ADHD. I specialize in helping individuals with ADD/ADHD learn personal regulation strategies. I understand the complexities that ADD/ADHD presents to a student and can assist students in developing better study habits, better time management and better planning skills. I am a Board Certified Educational Therapist, and, as such, I specialize in educating individuals with complex needs that arise from conditions which often coexist with ADD/ADHD such as learning disabilities, autism, emotional issues and medical conditions.

Algebra 1

Not everyone learns the same way, and I have been trained in the art of figuring out the best way to teach a student so he or she really understands. I have found ways to help students by using strategies such as stories, memory tricks, and drawings that make math easier to learn. I can teach your son/daughter ways to work with his/her natural strengths to conquer math. He/she CAN learn this stuff!

Algebra 2

Algebra 2 is a fun course to teach! I enjoy the complex algebra concepts covered in this class such as understanding the graphs of functions from their equations, logs, matrices, radicals and rational exponents. I have been teaching algebra 2 for almost 30 years to individuals who have difficulty learning math and therefore, I have developed a set of tricks and tools to help these complicated math concepts make sense!

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Students affected by autism often have difficulty with certain academic skills such as reading comprehension and writing organized stories and essays. I have been trained in methods of helping students develop higher order thinking skills and comprehension of figurative language - two difficult areas for individuals affected by autism. I am a reading specialist who has been trained at the master’s level, and through numerous workshops, in specific techniques such as strategies for learning figurative language; identifying main ideas; making inferences, predictions and interpretations; and determining motivations, emotions and causality. These reading comprehension strategies can be applied to written work to provide a guideline for writing essays. I have been teaching reading and writing strategies to individuals affected by autism for 30 years and I can help your son or daughter comprehend more of his or her reading assignments and produce more organized, insightful written work.

Dyslexia

I have almost 30 years of experience in teaching reading and spelling to individuals who have dyslexia. In order to be successful in teaching individuals who have dyslexia, a highly qualified teacher must understand how to teach phonics, since dyslexia makes learning phonics (reading and spelling) quite challenging. My masters degree in reading remediation trained me in the most effective methods of teaching reading to individuals who have dyslexia. The most successful, research validated training method is the Orton-Gillingham approach. I have used this method to teach many students with dyslexia (from Kindergarten to 60 years old) to read and spell.

Elementary (K-6th)

I completed a Bachelor of Science degree in Early Childhood Education, Magna Cum Laude. I have taught and tutored elementary school students in all subjects for almost 30 years.

English

Math: Not everyone learns the same way, and I have been trained in the art of figuring out the best way to teach a student so he or she really understands. I have found ways to help students by using strategies such as stories, memory tricks, and drawings that make math easier to learn. I can teach students ways to work with their natural strengths to improve their test scores.
English:I enjoy helping people learn reading comprehension techniques as well as learning to write organized, polished essays. I have 30 years experience teaching the reading and writing process and have developed a set of tools, strategies and handouts that help students learn faster. My training at the master’s level in teaching reading gave me the skills to help anyone – even a student who has struggled with reading and writing in the past, or is learning English as a second language – to improve his or her performance.

Geometry

I love geometry! It was always one of my favorite classes in high school. I loved extending my knowledge of high school geometry into trigonometry and calculus classes in college. I have taught geometry to many students over the years and have developed a wide range of tricks and strategies that utilize different approaches so that each student's natural learning talents can be utilized to help them learn geometry concepts.

Handwriting

I have 30 years of experience helping individuals improve their handwriting and penmanship. Individuals who are affected by dysgraphia – a learning disability that makes handwriting difficult, need specialized methods to help them become more skillful writers. Whether your child is affected by dysgraphia or simply missed out on handwriting instruction, I have been trained at the master’s level in techniques that help students improve their penmanship. Handwriting hasn't been taught well in elementary schools for many years, but it is an important skill! Some of the benefits a student with good handwriting may derive include: 1) greater capacity to listen and learn while taking notes, 2) more mental and attentional resources available when writing in-class and SAT/ACT essays, and increased learning in reading and spelling in elementary school. I will help your child become more efficient and skillful in handwriting (which should be an automatic process) so he or she can focus on the real reason we write things down in school - to communicate with others using advanced reasoning ability.

Hard Of Hearing

As an educational therapist, I have taught numerous students who were hard of hearing. I am trained at the master’s level in specific techniques for matching my teaching style to the student’s learning capabilities. Students who are hard of hearing or deaf require teaching methods that emphasize their strengths. I use techniques such as the following to help students: 1) use of visual aids, 2) being sure the student can see my lips, 3) not asking the student to look at my lips and a diagram simultaneously, 4) adjusting my pace of speech as needed, 5) providing written text when possible, and 6) checking frequently to be the student understands. Students who are hard of hearing may need to have classroom material explained in a different manner, or they may require specialized support in learning to read. During my master’s level program in remedial reading, I was trained in specialized methods of teaching reading (the Orton-Gillingham approach) that is successful in assisting students who are hard of hearing and are struggling with learning phonics.

ISEE

Students applying to private schools face stiff competition. Whether your child is applying to primary, middle or high school, scoring high on the ISEE is an important part of the application process. Students who understand the concepts tested on the ISEE, who know the "tricks and strategies" for getting the highest score, and who practice sufficiently, do their best on the test. I have 30 years of experience helping students score their “personal best” on standardized tests. My coursework in educational psychology at the PhD level prepared me to understand the mental and emotional demands that standardized testing places on students, and gave me the strategies necessary to help your child deal successfully with this important challenge. I will set up a study schedule for your child which includes taking practice tests. I will teach your child test taking strategies to maximize his or her score. I will creatively teach the concepts in order to maximize your child's understanding. If your child has special learning needs such as a learning disability or ADD/ADHD, he or she would profit from working with a specially trained tutor who can help your child do his or her "personal best."

Phonics

I have a masters of education (MEd) degree in learning disabilities and reading remediation. I'm highly qualified to teach reading, spelling and comprehension to individuals with learning disabilities and dyslexia. I have extensive training and experience with Orton-Gillingham based learning approaches. Orton-Gillingham is the "gold standard" approach for teaching literacy skills to individuals who have dyslexia.

Precalculus

Advanced math classes, such as pre-calculus, are easier to learn when a student has a solid grasp of math fundamentals. Even if a student has had great success with math in the past, and has the basics down pat, I can identify why the student is having difficulty with pre-calc and improve his or her understanding. By matching my teaching style to the student's learning style, I will present the pre-calc material in a way that the student really understands it.

Reading

To be a skillful reader, a student must master word attack and comprehension skills. As a highly trained remedial reading teacher, I have been trained in research-validated methods of teaching word attack (phonics and sight words) as well as reading comprehension strategies. Sometimes students struggle with reading because of conditions such as dyslexia, autism or ADD/ADHD. As a board certified educational therapist, I specialize in helping individuals with reading difficulties arising from special educational needs and can assist students of any age to learn word attack and comprehension strategies.

SAT Math

Not everyone learns the same way, and I have been trained in the art of figuring out the best way to teach a student so he or she really understands. I have found ways to help students by using strategies such as stories, memory tricks, and drawings that make math easier to learn. I can teach students ways to work with their natural strengths to improve their test scores.

Special Needs

I have a bachelors degree in early childhood education with minors in educating individuals who have emotional and behavioral difficulties and individuals who are gifted and talented. My masters degree in learning disabilities and educational diagnosis trained me to work with individuals with complicated learning needs arising from auditory or visual processing difficulties, dyslexia, dyscalculia (math learning disability) and other learning issues. I have almost 30 years experience teaching and tutoring individuals who have complex learning needs arising from ADD/ADHD, learning disabilities, autism, and medical and emotional issues.

Study Skills

The cumulative training of my degree programs and subsequent trainings have thoroughly prepared me to teach "executive skills" which are skills such as time management, planning/prioritization, memorization and study skills, goal setting, working memory and attentional regulation. These skills are crucial for success as a student and can be improved with direct teaching.

Trigonometry

Trigonometry is a great subject to teach and to learn! The key to learning it is to use a student's natural learning style to make the concepts clear and to use memory tricks to get the formulas to stick in the student's memory. I loved taking college trigonometry and found it so helpful in preparing me for calculus classes. Even if you don't plan to take calculus, you can be successful in trig!

Amazing tutor!

I came to Kari in desperate need of statistics help. She asked for material before to help herself prepare to help me, which I found very helpful. She really cared and helped me prepare for my test. If I hadn't gone to Kari my grade would have been low, but with her help I felt so much more confident walking into the test.
