Hi, I'm Dan, a recent graduate of UC Berkeley in History (High Honors, Phi Beta Kappa), tutoring history and English from the grade school level through college. I believe that motivation and organization are keys to academic success. I combine my coaching experience, a love of learning, and excellent teaching skills to help students meet their goals. I teach students how to read faster with better understanding and to approach their written work with the analytical eye expected of advanced high school and undergraduate students.

History is often experienced as a flood of disconnected names, dates, terms and events. I help students understand how history shaped our present world which can turn a chaotic whirlwind of seemingly disconnected details into compelling stories that inform our future.

English is as complex and difficult to master as it is rich and versatile. Reading comprehension and simple, clear, expressive language is foundational for all academic work. Reading and writing skills improve over time, a process that can be accelerated with guidance. I work with students to evaluate their natural strengths and then develop individualized strategies to help them build-up their written language proficiency, reading speed and comprehension.

I bring a wealth of academic, as well as real-world experience to my teaching. I consider myself to be a careful and empathetic listener. I strive to meet people on their own terms, understand their situation and work with them to come up with solutions that meet their needs. Not everyone learns the same way and an important part of the work I do is to collaborate with the student on developing a winning strategy at the beginning of an engagement. Then we work that plant together to methodically achieve the student's goals and objectives.

Reading,

Reading

I was already a strong reader when I started my undergraduate studies. However, my professors encouraged me to learn how to speed read and as a result I was often able to complete reading assignments of hundreds of pages in a day. Speed reading has the potential not only to increase the amount a student can read, but also improves reading comprehension. I integrate speed reading into my tutoring and recommend it for all ambitious students looking to improve their academic performance.

English

English,

English

I have excellent verbal and written English skills which contributed to my attainment of high honors (equivalent to magna cum laude) and induction into the Phi Beta Kappa society when I graduated from UC Berkeley in the Spring of 2020. I enjoy meeting my students where they are with their English skills and to help them build on their strengths and address any challenges they face. I also teach students how to read more efficiently and deeply and summarize their thoughts to produce high quality written assignments in their classes.
Literature,

Literature

My attainment of high honors and induction into Phi Beta Kappa was, to a great extent, a function of my ability to closely read and analyze my course materials. I love literature and language and can consistently identify subtle themes, as well as make careful observations, that uncover an author's perspective and intent, even when partially hidden. I love to teach students how to closely read texts and to craft compelling arguments which form the basis of assignment responses that teachers value and reward.

As a history student at Berkeley my achievement of high honors and induction into the Phi Beta Kappa Society was for the most part a function of my writing abilities. I possess excellent grammar, syntactic and vocabulary skills, which I combine with very strong close reading and analytic skills, to help my students produce well thought out, well constructed essays, literature reviews, and analytic and research papers.

Very helpful and responsive tutor

Daniel started coaching my son, a sophomore year high school student English language arts. David immediately loves his coaching way that is different from other tutors we used before. His time schedule is very flexible that fits my son’s need because sometimes we need extra help for some of his due projects. Highly recommended!

Fantastic Tutor, Highly Recommend

I am a Global Studies (essentially International Political Science) Major in my senior year. Dan has helped me a great deal with writing tutoring for two college-level upper division political science papers (300-level). He is knowledgeable about a great deal of topics, and is very knowledgeable about the requirements of academic writing in general. He can definitely help you write an awesome paper, whether you're writing about history, political science or any other topic!

Satisfied Student

As an international student, I was struggling to write a strong paper that has a heavy weight in the grade. Dan was very patient, dedicated, passionate about his work, and easy to work with. He tried not to change my flow and focused on improving it. He always made sure he understood my thoughts/ideas correctly, and his feedback helped to deepen my thoughts/ideas. I am not familiar with APA7, so I asked him proofreading as well. I got 9/10 on my paper as I missed the rubric but overall I was happy about the outcome. I strongly recommend him to everybody from beginners to intermediate if you want to make a concrete paper/essay. I was very happy to work with him and looking forward to working with him in the future.

Great Educator

He’s been very good On both subject matter and teaching my 15-year-old son how to better organize his time and become a better analytical writer across all subjects

Outstanding

Dan was able to break through my singular view of the problem and explain several options to move forward. He REALLY cared about helping me get to a better place in this class. He was more helpful in the first hour than some instructors are all semester.

An amazing teacher!

When I signed up on this website i was worried about the quality of the teaching. Dan's approach removed all my concerns. Rather than just cram a lot of test problems into each lesson he carefully designs each lesson to address the specific information I need to pass my teaching credentials exams. He diagnoses my weaknesses and revises lesson plans promptly. American History and writing are the areas I need to work on. Dan assigns specific homework and provides an amazing depth of knowledge when we meet. During the session I feel that each minute is well spent. If you are seeking quality tutoring, Dan is a great choice! His deep subject knowledge and solid teaching skills will help you succeed!
